  1. Sustainable Tourism • The World Tourism Organisation defines sustainable tourism as: • ‘Tourism which leads to the management of all resources in such a way that economic, social and aesthetic need can be fulfilled while maintaining cultural integrity, essential ecological processes, biological diversity and life support systems.’

  2. In other words: • ‘Tourism which meets the needs of present tourists and host communities while protecting and enhancing the needs of future generations.’ • Watch video clip of Sustainable tourism.

  3. Ecotourism: This is a branch of sustainable tourism. Watch clip on an Intro to Ecotourism.

  4. The International Ecotourism Society’s definition: • ‘Ecotourism is responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people’.

  5. The Ecotourism Resource Centre gives a more complex definition: • ‘ Ecotourism involves visiting natural areas with the objectives of learning, studying or participating in activities that do not bring negative effects to the environment; whilst protecting and empowering the local community socially and economically’.

  6. Task: • Copy the diagram showing the principles of ecotourism on page 301. • Watch the video clip on The Gambia. • Use a double page to draw up a case study of ecotourism in The Gambia. Include detail on all the ways in which the village compound with 9 accommodation huts manages to be an ecotourist’s destination. • Use the proforma to help!
