  2. You have only learned one past tense in French, L’imparfait is another one.

  3. FORMS: Observez!!

  4. ATTENTION!! • The je, tu, il, elle, on, ils, elles are all pronounced the same. However, they are spelled differently.

  5. Avoir and être

  6. NOTE THAT…. • The imparfait of all verbes except for the verb etre, is formed the same way (the nous form) • Nous commençons → commenc- → je commençais • Nous mangeons → mang- → je mangeais • Nous faisons → fais- → je faisais • Nous croyons → croy- → je croyais

  7. USE: • l’imparfait is used to describe habitual or continous actions in the past. • L’imparfait is also used to desribe physical, emotional conditions. • L’imparfait is used to desribe weather and age in the past.

  8. Exemples: • Je mangeais beaucoup de chocolat quand j’étais petit. • Je faisais mes devoirs quand le téléphone a sonné. • Il était triste. • Il faisait très chaud. • Elle avait 17 ans.
