2. What is persuasive writing? Persuasive writing is a type of writing that “persuades”…tries to convince a reader of an opinion or belief.

3. What does persuasive writing do? • It clearly states the problem or opinion. • It shares who or what may be able to solve the problem and provides possible solutions. • It presents a “Call to Action.” • Most Importantly, it uses F.R.E.D. – Facts. Reasons. Examples. Details.

4. Why do authors try to persuade their readers? • To change their mind • To keep readers (magazine subscription, etc.) • For money $$$ • To support a cause (donate to Relay for Life) • To be “best sellers” • To purchase a product

5. How do authors persuade readers? • “free gift included” • Advertisements • Humor • The use of celebrities to sell products: Cover Girl makeup uses celebrities from all aspects of the entertainment business to sell their products (Queen Latifah, Taylor Swift, Ellen DeGeneres, Drew Barrymore) • They tug at your emotions – they go for the heartstrings! • Scare tactics – a strategy that uses fear to influence the public’s reaction. (dictionary.com) • Familiar things • The use of favorite characters • Provides the benefits of their product/magazine/etc. and the problems associated with their competition.

6. Consider these things when writing persuasively: • Use a polite tone – do not come across as rude. • Make it sound exciting! • You may want to add a personal story or an example. • Give specific reasons (F.R.E.D.) • Asking/Answering a question may be beneficial to your writing. • Emphasize your stance towards the end of your writing.

7. Think O.R.E.O. • When writing persuasively, think OREO. • OREO: Opinion, Reason, Example, Opinion! • Let the OREO be the plan for your persuasive paragraphs. “Double Stuff” your OREO with 2 Reasons and 2 Examples that support your argument!

9. “Is 16 too young to drive a car?” • Let’s read a persuasive magazine article together. • As we read, highlight the different persuasive writing tactics that you see. • Please highlight at least one in each section of the article.

10. Your Turn. • In your writing spiral, you’re going to write a persuasive response to one of the following writing prompts. You have 4 options. • Your response must be 3 paragraphs long. • Remember to use your persuasive writing tactics. Look back at the PowerPoint/notes for help. • Remember to use both F.R.E.D. & O.R.E.O.  PERSUADE US!

11. Many parents give children a weekly or monthly allowance regardless of their behavior because they believe an allowance teaches children to be financially responsible. Other parents only give children an allowance as a reward for completing chores or when they have behaved properly. Explain what you think parents should do and why.

12. All-girl schools have been gaining popularity in recent years because of the belief that girls learn better when they aren’t competing with or intimidated by boys, who statistically get more attention in the classroom. Do you think all-girl/all-boy schools are a good idea? Why or why not? Use specific reasons and examples to support your position.

13. Today, there are more and more reality shows on television. Do these shows make good television? Why or why not? Explain your answer using specific reasons and examples.

14. Today’s top professional athletes often have salaries and bonuses in the tens of millions of dollars. Do you think these athletes deserve such high compensation? Why or why not? Explain your position and use specific reasons and examples.
