Purpose & Overview • Present school information. • Update our community on our progress. • Introduce teachers, staff, and administrators.
Strategic Plan 2005 -2009 Vision: All learners believe in their power to embrace learning, to excel, and to own their future. Mission: The Albemarle County Schools’ core purpose is to establish a community of learners and learning, through rigor, relevance, and relationships, one student at a time.
Strategic Plan Goals • Prepare all students to succeed as members of a global community and in a global economy. • Eliminate the Achievement Gap. • Recruit, retain and develop a diverse cadre of the highest quality teaching personnel, staff, and administrators. • Achieve recognition as a world class educational system. • Establish efficient systems for development, allocation and alignment of resources to support the Division’s vision, mission, and goals.
WAHS School Improvement Plan • Create collaborative teams committed to continuous improvement as our fundamental school improvement structure. • Eliminate the achievement gap and increase student access to and participation in more rigorous curriculum. (School Improvement Goal)
Western Albemarle HS Actions • Focus on processes that improve the school’s climate and community. (School Improvement Goal) • Strengthen our communications with students, parents, staff, and larger community to include feeder pattern schools and higher education. (School Improvement Goal)
Our School • Located on 75 acres of land • Renovations in 1996-97, 2004 & 2007 • 6 Learning Cottages • Very well-maintained by our custodial staff and ACPS Building Services • Leadership students, work-study students, and community members regularly improve our landscape
Our Staff • 97 Instructional Staff (Teachers & Assistants) • 6 Administrative Staff (Principals + Guidance Director + Athletic Director) • 8 Classified staff members. • 9 Food Service staff members. • 11 Custodians, both day and evening.

WAHS Athletic Accomplishments2007 - 2008 • Thirteen District Champions: Golf, Volleyball, Boys’ & Girls’ Cross Country, Boys’ Swimming, Boys’ and Girls’ Tennis, Girls and Boys’ Lacrosse, Field Hockey, Boys’ & Girls’ Indoor Track, and Girls’ Basketball • Five Regional Champions: Field Hockey, Boys’ Tennis, Boys’ Indoor Track, and Boys’ and Girls’ Lacrosse. • Four State Champions: Boys’ Tennis, Field Hockey, Boys’ Indoor Track, Boys’ Outdoor Track. • One National Championship : Boys’ Indoor Track Medley Relay Team (New York City, March, 2008)

WAHS Band /Chorus Accomplishments 2007 - 2008 • Excellent Rating: District Band Festival • Superior Rating: District Jazz Band Festival • Symphonic band Performed at 2008 Disney Honors Program • Jazz Band performed for the 2007 PVCC Jazz Festival and 2007 Piedmont Council of the Arts Gala • Excellent rating District Choral Festival
WAHSDrama Accomplishments 2007 - 2008 • Performed the original play Mountain Home written by Susan Hull on Nov. 2 & 3 in the WAHS Auditorium and again for The Festival of the book during First Night Virginia. • Musical: The Fantasticks 2008 – 2009 Season January 23 & 24 Theater Company performance of “The Katrina Project” (tentative) Spring Musical To Be Announced
WAHS DECA Accomplishments 2008 • District: Three Marketing Education students won top honors at the district level (regional) leadership conference – earning a trip to State Competition. • State: Western had two students score in the top 20% each earning a Certificate of Merit. • CAD classes received National Certification
WAHS Academic Competition Accomplishments 2007 - 08 • ACE TEAM: Jefferson District Regular Season Champions, Region II Champions, and 6th place in the State Tournament. • Destination Imagination: 2 DI Teams. • One of the teams placed 1st in their challenge at the regional level. The remaining team placed 2nd in their challenge at the regional level. • The regional winner placed 1st at the State and moved to Globals; placed 28th in Global Competition.

Some Summary Highlightsof Standard/Practical Progress • 8% more A’s and B’s During 07-08 • 9% fewer D’s and F’s During 07-08 • Second Semester failures were cut in half (12% - 6%) During 07-08 • We reached the AYP Goal of achieving the minimum benchmark level no matter the number of students. • We reduced the total number of classroom Standard/Practical Discipline Referrals by 16% • Using AYP measurable objectives and county guidelines to evaluate individual tests, WAHS IEP students went from passing 5/11 in 2007 to passing 10/11 in 2008.

2008 Governor’s Award for Academic Excellence • WAHS is one of only 10 high schools in the Commonwealth to receive this recognition. • WAHS met all state and federal achievement benchmarks for at least two consecutive years. • The Virginia Index of Performance (VIP Award) also recognizes achievement in enrollment in college-level classes, attainment of advanced diplomas, career and industry certifications, and the nutrition and physical activity scorecard.
