  2. RTII Defined • Comprehensive • Multi-tiered • Standards aligned strategy • Enables early identification and intervention for students at • academic or behavioral risk. • The goal of RTII is improved student achievement using • research-based interventions • matched to the instructional need and level of the student.

  3. Core Characteristics • Tiered Intervention and service delivery system that includes: • Research-based interventions • Flexible grouping • Fidelity of implementation

  4. Core Characteristics

  5. Activity To help illustrate the RTII problem solving process we will read a little story about a road trip from point A to point B. In this case, point A is San Francisco, CA. You need to get to Denver, CO in 3 days. Now, you know where points A and B are and how much time you need to get to your destination. What is the first step to planning a successful trip?

  6. That’s right; you get out a map and start to plan your route. There are many ways to get there but only a few will get you there in 3 days. You choose the most direct route. The next day you start out on your trip with your spouse aboard as the co-pilot/navigator. All goes smoothly until 5 hours into the trip and you meet a road block. Your co-pilot/navigator helpfully reads the sign for you that says: ROAD CLOSED. CONSTRUCTION. Now What?

  7. Right again! You get out your map and choose another route that will take you around the construction and put you back on the highway in less than 5 hours. This is the best option considering the information that you have available at the time. Once again, you set out to make it to Denver. You soon discover that this new way is full of twists and turns and pot holes and stop lights. After 2 hours of this, you decide you have had enough. Your helpful spouse suggests that you are not progressing fast enough and gets out the map to help you decide on yet another route to the highway.

  8. Together you decide on a route and re-plot your course. This route is smooth and straight and you make it back to the highway in 3 hours. The new problem is that you are now 3 hours behind your schedule and are in danger of not making it to Denver in time. You decide to drive 10 miles per hour faster in order to make up time and make it to Denver by the deadline. With your spouse encouraging you to drive swiftly, safely, and steadily toward your final destination, you make your appointment and complete your trip to Denver successfully! .

  9. RTII: Not just a “Special Education” Concern. RTII Within the RTII framework, teachers focus on the instructional supports they provide all students, rather than the identification of deficits in the RTII based on a model of prevention rather than failure Comprehensive system to address learning difficulties across the board students who are not achieving at the level expected. A school improvement initiative

  10. So where do coaches fit in? RTII and Coaching  Coaches are vital to establishing/maintaining systems approach to RTII process •Systems approach  Coaches play a role in questioning data and practices to help teachers examine exactly what they are doing in •Questioning data and practices to strengthen core classrooms • coaches provide professional development to introduce and support the RTII framework and promote fidelity • in interventions •Provide professional development to support RTII framework  Coaches can establish PLC’s at each tier to facilitate problem solving •PLC’s and facilitate problem solving •Evidence -based practices in all classrooms  Coaches support evidence-based practices in all classrooms

  11. What are some bumps in the road that you see for secondary RTII? RTII
