  2. Did you know? • In September 2009 the Government through the School Food Trust introduced new Nutritional Standards for school lunches in Secondary Schools. • These standards are mandatory so all caterers must comply with them.

  3. Why? • Because surveys showed that young people are consuming too much fat, sugar and salt. • These have an impact on health and wellbeing, in the short and long term eg: • Eating too much fat can cause weight gain and can increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes and some cancers. • Eating high sugar foods can cause weight gain and contribute to tooth decay. • High salt intake can cause high blood pressure which may lead to a stroke or heart disease.

  4. Why? • Because not enough of some essential nutrients are being consumed, such as calcium, iron and zinc. • These have an impact on health and wellbeing in the short and long term, eg: • Low calcium intake increases the risk of developing osteoporosis later in life. • iron deficiency anaemia causes headaches, tiredness and poor growth. • zinc deficiency symptoms include acne or greasy skin.

  5. How does affect you • Much more emphasis on students buying meal packages. • More fruit and veg in recipes. • More foods available which contain calcium, iron and zinc. • Less daily choice at lunch but more variety.
