  3. The successful Continuing Education operation narrows its programming arena to areas that can be addressed in a timely, effective manner.

  4. How do you determine the appropriate focus for yourContinuing Education Program? • Assess community needs • Determine institutional capabilities • Talents & experience of CE staff

  5. Once you have defined programming areas, then you can begin to plan your programs.

  6. Identify the motivating factorsfor adults to participate inCE programs: • Extend expectations • Professional advancement • Cognitive interests • Social relationships • Social welfare • Escape/stimulation

  7. The key to the success of a program is the level at which it meets the real or perceived needs of the client.

  8. Analysis • Listen (customer, those in related field) • Interview the future program participants • Interview experts in the field • Determine if others have addressed the • problem * Often the problem is not unique, you can shortcut by borrowing ideas from other sources.

  9. The most effective CE professionals are futurists; they identify needs before the client is aware they even exist.

  10. 10% - 15% of all course offerings should be “new” with no assurance they will be successful.

  11. Learning Assessment Outcomes Specific objectives should be expressed for each class you plan to conduct.

  12. Written learning objectives are required for all CE programs by Southern Association Accreditation Association.

  13. Preliminary Program Proposal • Name of person proposing to teach • Vitae of that person • When they propose to teach • The proposed program title • The description of the program • The program objectives • A description of the target audience • A plan to reach the audience • Suggested curriculum and materials

  14. Partnerships • Expand the capability of the CE unit • Expand the financial base for programming • Provide insight into the needs of the customer • Increases involvement in the community • Builds a stronger image of the CE unit and the institution
