  2. Choking • A person chokes when the airway is partly or completely blocked and airflow is reduced or cut off. • A choking person may die if first aid is not given immediately.

  3. Choking: Human Airways A person’s airway can be either partially or completely blocked. • Partially Blocked: results in either good air exchange or poor air exchange • Completely Blocked: results in NO air exchange

  4. Common Causes of Choking • Food or some other object stuck in the throat • The tongue of an unconscious person falling to the back of the throat • Blood or vomit collects in the throat

  5. Choking Causes Continued… • Trying to swallow large pieces of food • Eating and drinking while doing something else • Drinking too much alcohol before or during a meal • Gulping drinks with food in your mouth

  6. Avoiding Choking Take the following precautions • Chew food well before swallowing • Avoid talking and laughing while chewing food • Drink alcohol in moderation before and during meals • Avoid other physical activities while eating

  8. Choking First Aid Step 1: Assess the situation quickly • Unable to cry, cough, speak- something is blocking the airway • Skin may turn bright red or blue • Coughing or gagging means the airway is only partially blocked • Coughing is the most effective way to dislodge a blockage

  9. Choking First Aid Step 2: Try to Dislodge the Object • Firmly strike the choking person’s back between the shoulder blades with heel of hand • Each strike should be separate and distinct • Administer 5-6 firm strikes

  10. Choking First Aid Step 2 cont’d: Try to dislodge the object with abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver) (1) Locate belly button with one or two fingers (2) Make a fist with the other hand and place the thumb side against the middle of the abdomen

  11. Choking First Aid Continued… (3) Grab your fist with your other hand and give five quick, upward thrusts into the abdomen (4) Each abdominal thrust should be a separate and distinct attempt to dislodge the obstruction
