Regional context and rationale Southern Africa: • Relevant toward our mandate; 45% under poverty line, recurrent food insecurity, highest HIV/AIDS prevalence, worst GINI ratio • Relevance to the regional economy(60-80% of population employed in or depending from the agricultural sector). • Region of opportunities; Best Mo Ibrahim Index, strong leadership of South Africa, rich mineral and natural resources • Willingness and necessity to work regionally recognized by the Member States; SADC, RISDP/ RPRF 2010-2018, vision of a common market and regional currency

Regional approach Regional Initiatives/0rg Policies and Protocols Regional interventions Research , M&E Translation of P&P into national policies Interventions in selected countries Direct interventions to beneficiaries • Regional interventions: supporting regional process/actions, coordination function of regional institutions, knowledge management, strengthening the regional leadership/standards • Interventions in selected countries: improving translation of regional P&P into national plans, testing approaches/bringing experiences to influence regional initiatives and policies

RPSA Food Security ProgrammeSpecific Objectives Overall goal: Resilience in food security of smallholder farmers in SADC region is increased Outcome 1: Strengthening seed systems Outcome 2: Post harvest losses are reduced and food security and incomes for target small holders farmers’ households are increased through informed policy, capacity building and appropriate technology Outcome 3: Member states use risk reduction instruments, insurance mechanisms and safety nets for food security planning and interventions. Outcome 4: Governments, Parliaments and CSOs in SADC member states have increased capacities and apply them for equitable, responsible and accountable allocation and use of public resources for agriculture and food security.
