  3. iMFF is an acronym for “Intelligent MultiFeed Function” Intelligent MultiFeed Function (iMFF) is the most versatile way for advanced control of the Ultrasonic multifeed sensors iMFF is a functionality used on the Fujitsu fi-5950 high-speed production scanner and it’s three independent Ultrasonic sensors There are three intelligent modes for iMFF: ‘Manual mode’ to bypass a single page with overlapping items ‘Auto mode 1’ to bypass same size and same location overlapping ‘Auto mode 2’ to bypass overlapping items of various lengths iMFF was engineered specifically based on customer feedback High volume production scanning/service bureau environments encounter many unstructured form types and this can include physical and not just content Sticky notes, bar code stickers, photographs, address labels, receipts, scotch tape on torn pages, etc. What is Intelligent MultiFeed Function (iMFF)?

  4. fi-5950 Intelligent MultiFeed Function (iMFF) This tutorial shows the steps to configure the independent Ultrasonic Control settings & utilize the Intelligent MultiFeed Function (iMFF) on the Fujitsu fi-5950 High Speed Production scanner. This is intended as a quick overview and does not cover the full functionality of these advanced Intelligent features. Please refer to the “Intelligent MultiFeed Function Operator’s Guide” for more information. fi-5950 is equipped with three independent Ultrasonic sensors

  5. Step # 1) Start the Software Operation (SOP) Panel. Start > Programs > Scanner Utility for Microsoft Windows > Software Operation Panel Note: It might be useful to place a shortcut on your desktop and/or in your quick launch programs as I have in the sample below: How to configure the Intelligent MultiFeed Function (iMFF) Software Operation Panel (SOP)

  6. Step # 2) A message will pop-up to warn users that they should not start the SOP while running Kofax VRS. Select the OK button if not running VRS. If so, quit VRS then start the SOP. Do not run SOP while using VRS

  7. Step # 3a) Under "Device Setting 2" in the SOP highlight “Intelligent Multifeed Function". Choose the “Manual mode” radio option below iMFF Manual mode Note: There are three unique modes to choose from for iMFF (Manual mode, Auto mode 1 and Auto mode 2). Use one of the following three slides to configure the iMFF mode. Manual mode (Bypass by front panel button) Intelligent Multifeed Function

  8. Step # 3b) Under "Device Setting 2“ in the SOP highlight the “Intelligent Multifeed Function". Choose the “Auto mode 1” radio option below iMFF Auto mode 1 Auto mode 1 (Bypass by combination of length and position) Intelligent Multifeed Function To reset overlap patterns check the “Clear Overlap pattern” checkbox then choose OK or Apply

  9. Step # 3c) Under "Device Setting 2“ in the SOP highlight the “Intelligent Multifeed Function". Choose the “Auto mode 2” radio option below iMFF Auto mode 2 Auto mode 2 (Bypass by length) Intelligent Multifeed Function To reset overlap patterns check the “Clear Overlap pattern” checkbox then choose OK or Apply

  10. Step # 4) The SOP will ask you to confirm that you want to save your changes by writing to the EEPROM. Select the OK button to save your changes. Confirm Change to EEPROM

  11. Step # 5) Open the TWAIN driver from your scanning application.Mark the [Enable Scanner Panel] and“Enable [Scan] Button” checkboxes on the [Startup] tab of the “Options” dialog box Enable Scanner Panel to use [Scan] button in TWAIN In order to utilize the [Scan] button to continue scanning after a multifeed error enable the scanner operation panel Enable Scanner Panel Enable [Scan] Button

  12. Step # 6a) Select either “Use Memory on Scanner” or “Use both Memory” from the ‘Options’ button in the TWAIN driver Memory Caching in TWAIN driver When using the TWAIN driver, select [Use Memory on Scanner] or [Use both Memory] on the [Job/Cache] tab of the “Options” dialog box

  13. Step # 6b) From the Multifeed selection pull down menu, select “Check Overlapping (Ultrasonic)” Enabling Ultrasonic in TWAIN driver Select “Check Overlapping (Ultrasonic)” from the Multifeed Detection dropdown options

  14. Step # 6c) Open the ISIS driver from your scanning application.Check the “Enable” checkbox under “Multifeed Recovery” and adjust the “Auto-cancel Timer” to the desired setting MultiFeed Recovery Timer in ISIS driver Auto-cancel Timer: Scanning is not restarted for the set period of time after a multifeed error

  15. Step # 7) After a multifeed error detection, press the [OK] button to retain the scanned image or press the [Rescan] button to discard ‘Retain Image’ feature Simply click OK to retain image or Rescan to replace! Save time * Improve efficiency * Ensure accuracy * Increase automation • Applications and use scenarios: • Medical records with bar code • patient information • Expense reports with taped on • receipts • Invoices with attached checks • Random sticky notes • Insurance claims with • associated photos Bob, Please review

  16. Benefits of Three Independent US Sensors Note: General use of 3 US sensors example. If the documents have might have bar code labels, post-it notes or photos consistently in the same position then use this this function prior to using iMFF. Automobile Insurance Form example The left Ultrasonic sensor can be configured completely OFF or to ignore only specific areas of a document. In this case, set to ignore the area of the document that contains the image of the car where clients tape the photo to the page. The middle Ultrasonic sensor is configured to detect multifeed documents. No multifeed detected on this example therefore scanning would continue normally. The right Ultrasonic sensor also has been configured to detect any multifeed documents. In this case a yellow sticky note is detected and the scanner can be setup to notify the operator and stop scanning and/or pause scanning in order to immediately take corrective action. Important information under the sticky note is not lost. Bob, Please review

  17. Fujitsu fi-5950 “Intelligent MultiFeed Function” for Advanced Ultrasonic Double-Feed Detection Control In Action and Examples

  18. Use this mode when you want to continue scanning, while checking for overlapping items every time a Multifeed error is detected. Manual mode with ‘Retain Image’ feature Configuration: Operation: Easily press the OK button to accept or press the Rescan button to reject and continue Dental Form document with anticipated address label on the top portion of the document, however the two photographs were not anticipated

  19. The Ultrasonic Multifeed Detection has been configured to not detect multifeeds in the area where the address sticker is located, while still detecting multifeeds in the rest of the left Ultrasonic Sensor area. Dr. Scott Steiner License #A287312 1255 E. Arques Ave 408-555-1212 Sunnyvale, CA 94085 For the photographs, they could cover critical data underneath where attached to the page so we want the operator to verify this at scan time Dental Records with Labels & Photos (Random patterns) Labels and Random Photos example Ideally these example Dental Insurance forms would have been printed with the Dentist’s office address but assume this area was not printed or they had moved. Printing these forms is expensive and not wise to waste these documents Before & after photos

  20. Use this mode when you scan many sheets in a fixed format; for example, when every sheet has the same size item attached at the same location. Auto mode 1 (Bypass by combination of length and position) Configuration: Operation: Easily press the OK button to accept or press the Rescan button to reject and continue Example of a long EKG strip cut into three sections then taped onto a letter-sized page

  21. Fixed format of three EKG strips always taped to pages to be set to ignore intentional overlapping items Meanwhile on the top, some middle portions and the bottom of this page Ultrasonic Detection would still reliably catch an unintentional multifeed (sticky note, etc.) Electrocardiogram (ECG, EKG) The electrocardiogram (ECG, EKG) is used extensively in the diagnosis of heart disease, from congenital heart disease in infants to myocardial infarction and myocarditis in adults. Several different types of electrocardiogram exist. Auto mode 1 (Bypass by combination)

  22. Use this mode when you scan multiple sheets, each having different-size overlapping items at different locations. Auto mode 2 (Bypass by length) Configuration: Operation: Easily press the OK button to accept or press the Rescan button to reject and continue Cash register receipts taped to letter-sized paper. Can be used for high volume scanning to capture signatures on receipts for retail business

  23. The first receipt was scanned and obviously an overlap was detected. With iMFF the scanner memorized this length and allows bypass of the same length or shorter Since the second receipt is shorter than the first memorized length, a MultiFeed is not detected. Upon detection of a true multifeed or longer overlapping items the Ultrasonic sensor would detect and alert the operator for intervention or to memorize the new pattern Receipt Scanning for Point of Sale/Retail The volume of Point of Sale receipt tape produced daily by Retail businesses, restaurants and stores in general can prove to be overwhelming. Capturing the receipt with a customers signature authorizing charges on their credit cards helps to safeguard against legal disputes and assist in better customer service overall. Auto mode 2 (Bypass by maximum length)
