Alertness by Michael Burdge
Alertness • The quality of being alert • Being aware of what is going on around you • Allows quick perception and action • Lack of alertness may be caused by depression, attention deficit disorder, and fatigue
The Importance of Awareness • Alertness allows us to make the proper decisions in every day life • It allows us to become aware of circumstances • Alertness helps us to be ready for danger or unexpected circumstances • It also helps us to detect problems early • Careless people are often caught off guard
Psychology and Physiology • Alertness is related to both psychology and physiology • Many people who must be alert in their line of work, face daily situations that challenge and maintain their alertness - Example: Air Traffic Control • Studies show that people that are engaged in attention-intensive tasks are highly alert
Index Information • Our minds naturally create an index • Much of this information, however, is ignored • Alertness enables us to make better use of this index • It allows us to notice and “file away” the information for further use
Daily Alertness • In the workplace • On the road • Low gas • Milk • Tail light • Schedule
Priorities • There are so many things we deal with daily • Alertness helps us to distinguish what is most important • It is unwise to only deal with the most “pressing” needs
The Struggle • Teens today have many responsibilities, making it sometimes difficult to exercise proper alertness • Stress causes attention to detail to become lacking • Lack of alertness causes us to be: - easily distracted - careless - unsuccessful in fully completing instructions - forgetful
How to Improve Alertness • Use your brain • Exercise your mind • Adequate sleep • Drink Water • Learn how to handle stress • Stay fit and eat healthy
