What is HTTP? • HyperText Transfer Protocol, the underlying protocol used by the World Wide Web. HTTP defines how messages are formatted and transmitted, and what action Web servers and browsers should take in response to various commands. For example, when you enter a URL in your browser, this actually sends an HTTP command to the Web server directing it to fetch and transmit the requested Web page. www.wmo.ch/web/www/WDM/Guides/Internet-glossary.html • Basically HTTP is a protocol used by computers to transmit data from one computer to another. It is a universal format that is understood most all computers now-a-days and is the backbone of the World Wide Web (WWW).
About: Tim Bernes Lee • Born: 1955 • Native City: London • Education: B.A. in physics, Queen's College, Oxford, 1976 . • Hobbies: Windsurfing • Misc Facts: • Knighted by the British Empire in 1998. • While naming the “World Wide Web” he also considered the names “The Information Mine” and “Information Mesh” • In October 1999, Berners-Lee published the book Weaving the Web: The Original Design and Ultimate Destiny of the World Wide Web by Its Inventor, which told the personal story of how he created the World Wide Web and discussed the future of the mass medium.
The Story of Lee’s Invention • Tim Bernes Lee attended college at Oxford in 1976. 1980 he went to go work for a software company called CERN. • Always been fascinated by computers, it was at Oxford that he struggled with a problem. • This problem was of integrating and exchanging information held on different computers in often widely scattered places. • He found a solution to his problem and named it Enquire. • This method incorporated the use of hypertext, a system that links documents from different sources, forming an electronic path that users follow to obtain related information.
The Story Continued… • Around 1989, Lee gained support to develop the system. • 1990, his system, called the World Wide Web was being used at CERN. • Summer of 1991, Lee’s system was released to the public. • With this release and the ability to transfer images, videos, sounds, and texts in a straightforward manner he turned the internet from a strictly researching tool to an international communications medium, commercial tool, and social phenomenon used by millions of people.
How Did He Do It? • I wrote the program using a NeXT computer. This had the advantage that there were some great tools available -it was a great computing environment in general. In fact, I could do in a couple of months what would take more like a year on other platforms, because on the NeXT, a lot of it was done for me already. There was an application builder to make all the menus as quickly as you could dream them up. There were all the software parts to make a wysiwyg (what you see is what you get - in other words direct manipulation of text on screen as on the printed - or browsed page) word processor. I just had to add hypertext, (by sub classing the Text object) -Tim Berners Lee
No royalties • While the component ideas of the World Wide Web are simple, Berners-Lee's insight was to combine them in a way which is still exploring its full potential. Perhaps his greatest single contribution, though, was to make his idea available freely, with no patent and no royalties due. In 1994 he founded World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) at the MIT Laboratory for Computer Science in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and in 2003, the organization decided that all standards must contain royalty-free technology, so they can be easily adopted by anyone. What Did This Do? • Tim Berners Lee’s WWW and HTML is one of the greatest inventions to computer communication; and probably one the greater inventions of the 20th century. • Lee is the reason we can chat on AIM, surf the web, download media, research information on vast databases, and basically anything the average person uses the internet for. His HTTP created a universal medium to which information can be shared between all personal computers. • He is of the main reason why people bought computers; and how/why computers became so popular. He gave people a reason to purchase a computer and connect to the internet. • The effect to which he has impacted the digital world and the everyday lives of people is profound to the extend that you can’t imagine life now without HTTP or more or less the World Wide Web because it is so commonly used. Even a game like counter-strike could not have been made without Lee’s HTTP.
