The Tale of Two Brands --A Brief History of Borders Group Inc. Borders is a combination of two brands -- Borders® and Waldenbooks® 1962 - The original Borders bookstore was located in Ann Arbor, Michigan where it was founded. 1971 – The first store, had only a stock of used books and was two rooms, which were previously owned by James “Iggy” Osterberg (aka Iggy Pop) 1984 – Kmart Corporation purchases Waldenbooks. 1992 – Kmart purchased Borders and formed the Borders -Walden Group. 1995 – Borders-Walden Group was renamed Borders Group Jen Shinefeld 021
