  2. DO NOW: • What Kind Of Driver Are You Going to Be? • How is Driving Going to Change Your Life?

  3. Graduated Driver License(GDL) • New Jersey system that gradually introduces driving privileges to 1st time drivers. • GDL extends practice driving time, requires a min. age of 18 in order to receive an unrestricted, basic drivers license • Failure to adhere to restrictions can result in fines and/or suspension of driving privilege.

  4. Special Learner Permit • Must be at least 16 years old • ONLY DRIVING INSTRUCTOR CAN PURCHASE PERMIT!!! • Pass MVC VisionTest • Pass MVC KnowledgeTest • Enroll in “behind the wheel” course • Parent/Guardian Consent

  5. Once you attain permit, you may… • now practice with a supervising adult • At least 21 years old • Have NJ license for 3 years min. • Follow all restrictions(page 20) • No driving between 11:01pm- 5Am • No cell phones/Ipods/Wireless devices • Limited to any parent and 1 addt. passenger

  6. You turn 17… • With 6 months of supervised driving, you are eligible to get the probationary license • Must be 17 • Must pass MVC road test

  7. Probationary License • Must practice unsupervised driving for 1 year. • Observe all restrictions including • No driving 11PM- 5am • No phones/ipods • License Plate Decals • Limited to (1) non family member

  8. Basic Drivers License • Must be at least 18 • 1 year min of unsupervised driving • Starts from the day your probationary license is issued • Pay required fee

  9. Turn 16 • Have a Driving Instructor Purchase your permit • Pass the NJDMV eye Test • Pass the Knowledge Test • 6 Hours Behind the Wheel Training • Have the Permit Validated • Pass the DMV Road Test on/after your 17th birthday • Exchange your permit for a probationary License • On the 1 year anniversary of your road test, exchange your probationary license for the Basic license Steps to Obtain a Basic NJ Driver License
