  1. Lets Review our Organelles:Go over Cell Organelle Quiz from yesterday

  2. Getting Started: Fri 9/6 • Why is the plasma membrane sometimes called the second most important part of the cell? • Describe what the plasma membrane does and why this is important for the cell? • Lets look at what happened in our class experiment from yesterday

  3. CELL TRANSPORT

  4. Diffusion • Diffusion:random movement from an area of HIGH concentration TO an area of LOW concentration until they reach DYNAMIC EQUILIBRIUM. • This is a form of PASSIVE TRANSPORT which requires NO ENERGY! • Dynamic Equilibrium: when the number of particles entering and leaving a region are equal. The movement continues but there is no net change.

  5. Facilitated Diffusion • Facilitated Diffusion: Uses transport proteins to help the passage of larger molecules, like glucose, in and out of the cell across the cell membrane. • A type of PASSIVE TRANSPORT which requires NO ENERGY!

  6. Osmosis • Osmosis:diffusion of WATER. This is a type of PASSIVE TRANSPORT which requires NO ENERGY!. • Water diffuses based on the concentration of water compared to other dissolved particles, like salts or sugars.

  7. Osmosis Cont… = Water = Solute • Hypotonic Solutions: More water outside the cell then inside the cell, so water moves INTO cell

  8. Osmosis Cont… • Hypertonic Solution: More water was located inside the cell then outside of the cell, water moves OUT of the cell

  9. Osmosis Cont… • Isotonic Solution: A solution where there is equal concentration of water inside and outside of the cell, therefore the net movement of water is equal in and out of the cell.

  10. Turgidity/Plasmolysis • Turgor pressure: When a plant is fully watered and the cell vacuoles are full. • Plasmolysis: The shrinking or wilting of a cell due to water leaving the cell.

  11. Osmosis Cont… • Plasmolysis and cytolysis in plant and animal cells After Before

  12. Assignments for today: Fri 9/6 • Eggsperiment DEMO: Look at experiment set up in front: hyper hypO or iso • Osmosis OR Agony Ecstasy Case study • Cell Transport KIM diagram- complete for HW if not done in class. • Cell and Cell Transport test is on Wed 9/11

  13. Lets Review: Mon 9/9 • Microscope and Cell Theory • Cell organelles/ ProkvsEuk • Cell Membrane • Cell Transport: Active, Passive • TEST WED 9/11*** • TURN IN YOUR CASE STUDY FROM FRIDAYS CLASS!!

  14. Journal: • Complete the Transport KIM diagram • Review Passive Transport From Friday • Finish Transport Notes: Active Transport

  15. Active Transport • Active Transport: An ENERGY REQUIRING process in which particles are moved from an area of LOW concentration to an area of HIGH concentration.

  16. Endocytosis • Endocytosis: the process by which a cell engulfs substances that are too large to pass through the membrane. ENERGY REQUIRING process. • Phagocytosis • Pinocytosis

  17. Exocytosis • Exocytosis: The passage of large molecules such as manufactured proteins out of the cell. ENERGY REQUIRING process.

  18. Mon 9/9: Assignments for today Create your own study guide: We may use yours in a review tomorrow in class. • Flash Cards • Create a Review Game • Stations Review Lab • USE YOUR IMAGINATION!
