What is Pre-Advanced Placement? • Pre-AP is a curriculum that focuses on skills and concepts for building success in Advanced Placement classes (which begin in tenth grade) and Advanced Placement tests. • Pre-AP lays the foundation by developing a “planned program of teaching skills and concepts over several years.”
Pre-AP is based on the following beliefs: • Students can perform well at rigorous academic levels. • We can prepare students for higher intellectual engagement by starting the development of skills and acquisition of knowledge as early as possible.
Pre-AP at Millbrook Middle School • Accelerating the Reading and Math curriculum by working on current grade standards as well as standards for the following grade. (There will be summer reading.) • Science and Social Studies will be project based. • Students will receive some music instruction. • Students will have homework.
Effective School Activities & Study Habits • Good study habits produce great school success. • Organization - Organize your schedules and assignments appropriately. • Time Management - Stay on task. Focus on instruction and group activities. • Homework - Individual assessment in learning helps students become more responsible and reinforces lessons learned in class (McCann). • Test Preparation - Studying for tests is important. Create good notes and practice self-tests of concepts learned in class. • Rigor and High Expectations - Students’ engagement in high quality instruction • Parents and Teachers - Support, team-work, and dual communication http:www.eHow.com
5th Grade Summer Reading • 5th Grade summer reading: Frindle, by Andrew Clements. • There will be correspondence throughout the summer between teacher and students to discuss assigned reading activities.
6th Grade Summer Reading • The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. • Correspondence will take place over the summer.
7th Grade Summer Reading • The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. • The book will be available for purchase in 2 weeks. It is $9.99 at Books a Million in Prattville without the discount. Students should tell the salesperson that they are purchasing the book for summer reading at MMJHS to receive the teacher's discount. • Students will also need a flash drive.
8th Grade Summer Reading • Stargirlby Jenny Speinelli $8.95 at Books-A-Million (Educator discount is available.) • Supplies Needed • 3 Ring binder with pockets • Black or blue pens • No pencils
7th Grade Pre-AP Pre-Algebra • Supplies need: • Graph paper • Calculators (4 function with percent key) Calculators can be scientific.

8th Grade Science • $15.00 lab fee • Scientific Calculator • Metric Ruler • 2 composition notebooks • This class will require students to be mathematically adept in order to manipulate equations. • Organization and time utilized for homework are mandatory.
