BACKGROUND • The need to establish a Nation Wide Ambulance and Emergency Service - to bridge a long standing gap - • Head of State in his Annual Sessional address to Parliament in 2002 (after the unfortunate incident) charged the Ministry of Health and its collaborators to establish a Nation Wide Ambulance Service -to provide effective Pre-hospital care.
H • National Ambulance Service (NAS) with the inception of seven (7) pilot stations (PS) in three (3) regions at the end of 2004 • Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) trained.

2008 POW • Thrust for 2008 is to increase access to emergency care through the establishment and operation of an efficient nationwide ambulance service.
Priority Activities • Establish 6 additional ambulance stations • Recruit and train 100 emergency medical technicians (EMT)- Basics and upgrade the skills of 45 EMT- Basics to EMT- Advanced. • Introduce a program to ensure timely and efficient management of emergencies • Screen and immunize at risk EMTs against hepatitis B • Strengthen the functional and communication linkages between NAS, facility based ambulance and health facilities • Finalise the NAS bill for approval by cabinet and passage by parliament
Expected Results • Six new ambulance stations established • Six districts with functional ambulance services • One hundred EMT-Bs trained and 45 EMT- Bs upgraded • Immunisation of 100% EMTs against hepatitis B
SUMMARY 2008 to be the beginning of the process of building an effective EMS for Ghana
