  1. The Polar Ice Caps and Global Warming

  2. Ice Caps? • The ice caps help to regulate the planet’s temperature: they absorb heat from the ocean, which absorbs heat from the atmosphere.(lantent heat of melting) • If the ice caps are melting, then they can’t absorb as much heat from the ocean, which then can’t absorb heat from our atmosphere, which is getting warmer. (global warming!)

  3. Water displacement • When floating ice (ice bergs) melts, the sea level should not change because water has already been displaced by the floating ice. • When land ice (glaciers…) fall into the ocean (as ice or water), the sea level rises because the weight of this ice has not yet been displaced.

  4. …Rising Sea Levels • The sea levels will also rise because of rising temperatures. The ocean will expand as it gets warmer. • A century ago, costal sea levels had been rising by a millimeter a year. For the last 20 years, it has been increasing by 2 millimeters, and within the last century, it has increased to 3 millimeters.

  5. Rising Sea Levels Cause: • More hurricane storm surges • High tides • Costal areas (like Florida) would be in danger of flooding.

  6. Global Warming • green house affect: gases like CO2 trap heat. (Green House gases) • To keep the affects of global warming from getting worse, green house gas emissions would have to be reduced by 80%
