Program Completion Information Elementary Special Education • 124 credits • 2.5 overall GPA • 48 credits General Education • 76 credits Education courses • 4 Blocks, plus 1 summer/some evenings • 127 credits • 2.5 overall GPA • 67 credits General Education • 60 credits Education courses • 4 Blocks

  3. Understanding the Application Process • Application deadline for Spring is October 15 • Application deadline for students starting Block 1 in Fall is February 15 • 50 seats available: first come-first served.

  4. Application Criteria • 55 credit hours (including current semester) towards General Ed. requirements • Cannot count developmental courses in 55 credits • EDUC-F200, SPCH-S121, ENG-W131, MATH-T101, all completed with a “C” or better. “C-” does not count • Completed, or be enrolled in, ALL Language Arts content courses • Overall GPA of at least 2.50 (no rounding up) • “C” or better in all L-Arts and Math content courses. • Passing score on Praxis 1 tests or alternatives

Application Criteria Successful Completion of ONE course from the Social Studies Content Block (“D-” or higher) Elementary: • ECON-E100, E150, or E101 (Economics) • POLS-Y103 (Introduction to American Politics) • GEOG-G201 (World Regional Geography) • HIST-H101 • HIST-H105 or H106 (American History I or II) • SOC-R220 (The Family) Special Education: • POLS-Y103, Y107, Y109 (Political Science) • HIST-H105, H106 (American History) or GEOG-G110 (Human Geo.) • SOC-S163 (Social Problems) or GEOG-G201 (World Reg. Geo.)

Application Criteria Successful Completion of ONE course from the Science Content Block (“D-” or higher) Elementary: • BIOL-L100 (Humans & the Biological World) • CHEM-C104 (Physical Science & Society) • GEOG-G107 (Physical Systems of the Environment) Special Education: • BIOL-L100 (Humans & the Biological World) • CHEM-C104 (Physical Science & Society) or CHEM-C101 (Elementary Chemistry I) NOTE: To complete program, one science course must include a lab; but the lab is not needed before you apply.

  7. 2.5 Grade Point Average and Praxis I – PPST Pre-Professional Scores Elementary and Special Education IUS GPA of 2.5 Must maintain throughout program! Must have attempted the Praxis I (Passing Scores) Math 175 Reading 176 Writing 172

PRAXIS 1 Alternative Scores • PRAXIS 1 = Composite of at least 527 or individual scores • Math 175, Reading 176, Writing 172 • ACT = At least 24 based on Math, Reading, Grammar, and Science • SAT =At least 1100 for Verbal and Math, NOT Writing • GRE with a score of at least 1100 based on Verbal and Quantitative • Anyone with a Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution is exempt.

Taking the PRAXIS 1 • Paper and Pencil Tests • Available at IU Southeast - More expensive • Scores available within 6 weeks • Computer-based Tests • Prometric Testing Center, Lagrange Rd, Louisville (502-423-0478) • Prometric University of Louisville (502-852-6607) • Writing scores available in approximately 2 weeks. • Praxis can be taken once each calendar month • no more than six times during any one calendar year. • Praxis Scores are available on-line for about a month • be sure to save as a PDF—costs $40+ for another report!

Studying for the PRAXIS • Praxis Registration Information brochures are available on the wall outside the Student Development Center and in SOE Advising Suite • Preparation materials for Praxis are available from ETS (some for sale) in the Library and Bookstore • Allow yourself about one month to prepare and study • Study with a friend or establish a study group

  12. What does is it mean... Getting into Blocks? You won’t be taking any other general education courses while in blocks. • Block 1 – Child as Learner • Block 2 – The Literate Child • Block 3 – Integration across the Curriculum • Block 4 – Teaching in an Era of Accountability • Special Education students will take 1 summer block and some evening classes.

  13. Field Experience • ALL blocks include field experiences at specific schools both in Indiana and Kentucky. • It is MANDATORY for students to be available Monday through Friday from 8:00 – 4:00! Practicaschedules will be set early in each semester.

  14. What Else…? • Continue taking courses that are requirements for your degree • Set a goal to finish General Education classes before Block 1 • Make an effort to take ENG-W 250 (W 131 is pre-requisite) and MATH “T” courses as soon as possible—they fill quickly • Keep a close watch on your GPA • Faculty may review a student’s status at any point in the program • If you need to e-mail anyone, please include your student ID • See your SOE faculty advisor at least once a semester
