LOGO What are we here for? - 1 • To give teaching and research in language and linguistics at UoK an identifiable home, identity and research base, • To bring together those with interests in the study of language, be it modern or classical, philosophical, pure or applied, • To act as a focus and locus for research collaboration and cross-fertilisation in linguistic matters across the whole institution. • To forge research links at national and international level.

  3. What are we here for? - 2 • To provide a co-ordination point for collaborative grant applications. (Linguistics and language studies is an area ring-fenced for support by the AHRC.) • To provide a focus for recruitment at undergraduate and graduate levels

  4. What are we here for? – 3 Proactively and reactively • To centre linguistic research activities, • To encourage ideas and proposals • To support collaboration and funding proposals, both nationally and internationally

  6. What do we cover? – 2 • Linguistic investigation of a variety of languages including: • Catalan • Celtic • Cornish • Danish • English • French • German • Greek, classical: and modern • Italian • Latin • Old English/Latin interface • Russian • Spanish

TheMedway project: Language(s) and Cultures in Medway Rationale: • Growing interest in and awareness of Thames Gateway expansion: stocktaking and projection – wide basis for potential interdisciplinary research • Establish linguistics and connected disciplines as part of UoK in Medway • Fieldwork for final years project; data gathering and handling • Cooperation: linguistics with Anthropology, CLS/English, Social Psychology, Sociology, THRS, Urban Studies? Any more? Possible Themes: • The English(es?) of Medway • Languages and Language communities of Medway • Racial communities in Medway: their cultures and languages and interactions • Religious communities in Medway: their cultures and languages and interactions • Mutual effect of these on each other and Medway English • Trades, employment, history and language • Considerations from syntactic, phonological, lexical, pragmatic, sociological and sociolinguistic perspectives. • Consequences and applications of insights gained, e.g. business, residential and industrial accommodation, environmental and community plannin
