  2. Congratulations on your appointment. The position is critical to ensure the health and vitality of your Club, our District and the Organisation as a whole. Your success in training and motivating your Membership team will assist Lions Clubs International to maintain its position as the world’s largest Service Club organisation Membership Chairperson

Membership Chairperson First and foremost, to understand the role, remember:- WE ARE DEALING WITH VOLUNTEERS NOT EMPLOYEES • Every club is unique. • Each member is unique. • Group dynamics will have to be catered for. • You need to be knowledgeable iro Lions Clubs International Membership Programmes and Policies • You need to have a comprehensive understanding of the duties of the Membership Chairperson. There are 2 Primary areas of responsibility:- • Internal motivation (Development) • External motivation and marketing (Recruitment)

  5. Committee Responsibilities Recruitment Development Retention New Club Extension

  6. Committee Functions Keep your ears to the ground and know what members want In control of the major asset of your Club – Your Membership You are the conscience of the club Create the climate within the Club that will encourage growth

  7. Committee Functions Remember, membership growth is not solely the responsibility of the Membership Chairperson / Committee, but we have to be the catalyst for change

  8. Committee Objectives • Set programme of regular committee meetings • Set goals that are realistic and measurable • Develop tactics to meet these goals

  9. Committee Meetings • Prior to Club’s Board of Directors Meetings • Follow principles of good meeting practice • Prepare report to Club Board of Directors and Business meetings

  10. Set Achievable Targets • New member recruitment • Membership retention • Membership orientation • Personal satisfaction and achievement

  11. Develop Tactics • Effective public relations • “Meet the Lions” evenings • Club atmosphere “where” people want to be • Encourage personal development

  12. Recruiting Wheel Business Associate Professional Person Church Group Friends Neighbours Sports Club Other Civic Clubs Relatives

  13. Membership Retention • Meaningful activities • Professional meetings • Members needs being catered for • Pride in the club and being a member

  14. THE “KEEPEM” PRINCIPLE • K-know your fellow Lions • E-evaluate their capabilities • E-encourage their participation • P-pamper them a little • E-emphasise teamwork • M-maintain fellowship among members

  15. Why Lions Lose Interest • Discrepancy between expectation and reality • Not making a difference • Assignments too routine • Lack of support • Little prestige • No personal growth • No initiative or creativity

Causes of Membership Losses • Lack of proper screening for new members • Inappropriate induction ceremony • Inadequate information sharing • Lack of participation and involvement • Sponsor’s not living up to responsibilities • Insufficient attention to members • Lack of friendship or fellowship • Cliques

Causes of Membership Losses • Improper use of individual talents • No meaningful club projects • Clubs do not measure up to expectations • Boring meetings – too formal / inflexible • Wrong meeting place and / or time • Complacency / indifference / apathy of club members • Lack of proper recognition

  18. Causes of Membership Losses • No motivation / enthusiasm / dedication from club members • Poor communication • No follow up on transfer members • Lack of encouragement to attend Zone / Region / District events • Inadequate publicity

  19. New Club Extension • Identify area • Identify individuals • Arrange introductory meeting in conjunction with your District G.M.T. • Orientation sessions in conjunction with your District G.M.T.
