  3. Early Years • Raised in Normandy • At 22, Monet joined the Paris studio of the academic history painter Charles Gleyre • Classmates where future Impressionists • Did not experience a lot of success during his youth

  4. Inspiration • Found subjects to paint in his immediate surroundings: • First wife: Camille • Second wife: Alice • Frequent visits from great artists, Manet and Renoir • Often painted with Monet while teaching him
