  2. 2 6 7 History ▶Reading Comprehension Discovery of Anesthesia The first real anesthetic was discovered by Sir Humphry Davy in 1799. He is famous for discoveries in the fields of electricity and magnetism. Nitrous oxide gas was reputed to be a deadly poison, and Davy resolved to disprove this by inhaling it himself. He found that it induced a wild, uncontrollable mirth at the same time depriving him of sensation in his limbs. Immediately, he dubbed it “Laughing Gas,” and as it seemed to him “capable of destroying physical pain.” He wrote that it could “probably be used with advantage during surgical operations.” In 1844, Horace Wells, a young American dentist, wondered about a demonstration given by Professor Colton. The lecturer handed out round bladders of Laughing Gas to his students. One of the students ran so widely around the auditorium that he cannoned into the wooden benches and the wall. Wells asked if he was hurt. The man said that he could not feel anything. Wells thought this was something a dentist could use. He invited Colton to his surgery while he had an uncomfortable wisdom tooth removed by a colleague. The operation was painless and a complete success. "Oh!” he gasped. “A new era in tooth pulling!” Wells held his own public demonstration of the gas. Unfortunately, it failed miserably because the bladder was removed too soon, and the patient, waking up, roared that he was in agony. He was booed from the auditorium and died a few years later. William Morton, Wells’ partner, continued the work with a new substance, sulfuric ether. Unlike Laughing Gas, ether was a volatile liquid and could be administered by soaking a handkerchief and holding it against the nose. Morton held a demonstration in which he held his mask over the patient's face. Five minutes later, he fell into a deep sleep. The surgeon made an incision. The patient did not move a bit. The operation on October 16, 1846 was successful. ☞ Choose the best answer based on the article.
