Ordered Pairs • An ordered pair comes in the form (x,y) with x always first and y always second • The x value refers to the numbers on the x axis • The y value refers to the numbers on the y axis
Coordinate Plane • The coordinate plane consists of 4 quadrants • Starting in the upper right hand corner with quadrant 1 and moving counterclockwise to quadrant numbers 2, 3, & 4. • There are 7 different places in the coordinate plane. What are they?
Coordinate Plane Y Quadrant II Quadrant I Origin X Quadrant III Quadrant IV
Plotting Points • To plot a point on the x,y axis, always start at the origin. • Using the x value, move left or right on the x axis depending on whether the x value is positive or negative. • Using the y value, move up or down on the y axis depending on whether the y value is positive or negative.
More on plotting points • For every 1 point on a graph it takes two numbers to identify the correct location. • Think of a game of Bingo as it needs both a letter and a number to identify the correct square.
Plot the Point (2,3) Y up 3 X over 2 (2,3)
Plot the Point (-2,-1) Y X (-2, -1)
How is each Pt. Different? Y (-2,2) (2,3) X (3,-1) (-2,-1)
