  5. 3. Which fishery is the largest by size of catch in tonnes in Canada? Atlantic is the largest by weight. • Atlantic: 813 818 = 3.7 • Pacific: 218 708 The Atlantic fishery catches nearly 4 times as much fish (by weight) than the Pacific OR • Pacific: 218 708 = 0.2687 = 27% • Atlantic: 813 818 The Pacific fishery is only 27% the size of the Atlantic fishery by amount of fish caught

  6. Atlantic: 813 818 = 20 • Fresh water: 40 566 The Atlantic fishery catches 20 times as much fish (by weight) than the Fresh water fishery OR • Fresh water: 40 566 = 0.0498 = 4.9% • Atlantic: 813 818 The Fresh water fishery is only 5% the size of the Atlantic fishery by amount of fish caught

Which fishery is the largest by money earned? • The Atlantic Fishery makes the most money Atlantic: $1,589,596,000 = 5 Pacific: $315,793,000 The Atlantic Fishery makes 5 times more money than the Pacific Fishery Atlantic: $1,589,596,000 = 19.2 Fresh Water: $82,505,000 The Atlantic Fishery makes over 19 times more money than the Fresh Water Fishery

  8. 5. List three reasons why the cod population has dropped. Possibly due to: • Overfishing • Global warming • Technology – eco-sounders and larger nets

  9. 6. Why are processing operations located in rural areas? • Processing operations need to be located close to the source = close to the coast so fish can be packaged/frozen quickly so they don’t spoil

  10. 7. What is aquaculture? List examples of product. • It is fish farming. Fish are grown in ponds that are netted off and protected from predators. • Examples: trout, salmon, oysters, mussels, clams
