Art • Mannerism brought about the end of the Renaissance, by breaking down the principles of balance, harmony and moderation. • Mannerism was eventually replaced by the baroque movement. • Baroque art brought together classical Renaissance ideals and spiritual feelings of religious revival. • Monarchs used the art to make their subjects in awe of their power.
Literature • Writing and theater reached new heights in Europe. • William Shakespeare emerged as the most famous dramatist in England. • He turned theater into a business. • His works performed at the Globe were very affordable so even the poor could attend. • Shakespeare’s mastery for the English language and understanding of human emotion made him very successful.
Political Thought • The English Revolution brought new political ideas. • Thomas Hobbes was alarmed by the revolution in England. • Hobbes believed that without absolute rule society would destroy itself. • John Locke argued against absolute rule. • He believed all humans had natural rights, rights with which they were born (life, liberty, property) • Government protected people's rights and people should act reasonably toward government. • Ideas found in Dec. of Independence and Constitution.
