Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) TAMUQ Student Chapter Orientation Meeting October 8, 2006
What is SAE? • Founded in 1905 • Largest organization in defining aerospace and automotive engineering standards • Sections in over 97 countries • A shared network of engineering knowledge
SAE Categories • Automobiles
SAE Categories • Aerospace
Functions of SAE Student Sections • Arrange technical lectures • Arrange symposiums and contests • Arrange technical field trips • Participate in student competitions: • Aero design • Formula SAE • Baja SAE • Supermilage
TAMU and SAE • TAMU has been joining the Formula SAE competition (FSAE) since 1998 • TAMU has been won official competitions over the past 4 years • TAMU has also developed the Sunracer solar car and taken part in competitions in the US and Canada.
TAMU and SAE • TAMU has been joining the Formula SAE competition (FSAE) since 1998 • The project is designed in the fall and built and tested in the spring semester • TAMU has won official competitions over the past 4 years.
TAMU Solar Car (Sunracer*) http://www.tamu.edu/sunraycer/
Our plans…. • Arrange two technical lectures for the academic year • Arrange a technical field trip • Design and build solar scaled solar vehicle
Vision… • Be able to build a fully operational vehicle to participate in regional contests

The full electrical system Exploded view: Electrical System
Wheels configuration The general mechanical system The steering system Exploded view: Mechanical System
Solar array Exploded view: Source of Power • The solar array is the vehicle's only source of power • The array is made up of many (often several hundred) photovoltaic solar cells that convert the sun's energy into electricity • The cells are wired together to form strings. Several strings are often wired together to form a section or panel that has a voltage close to the nominal battery voltage • The power from the array is used either to power the electric motor or stored in the battery pack for later use
