  1. Today is Monday, March 18, 2013 Homework: -Read Chapter 12, Lessons 1 and 2 (for tomorrow’s class) -Complete Chapter 12 H.W. Packet (due Friday) Warm Up: Brainstorm with your face partner various chemical changes that you noticed over the weekend.

  2. Goal for Today • SWBAT demonstrate an understanding that products of chemical reactions have different properties from the reactants by exploring different real world examples.

  3. Chemical reaction – one or more substances change into other substances with different chemical or physical properties. A chemical change occurs during a chemical reaction • Reactants – substances used in the reaction • Product – substance made during the reaction

  4. Chemical equation – a special kind of “sentence” that shows what happens during a chemical reaction • 2H2O  2H2 + 02 • 2Mg + O2 2MgO • Law of Conservation of Mass – matter cannot be created or destroyed during a chemical reaction. • Total mass of reactants = total mass of products

  5. Types of chemical reactions : • Decomposition reaction (breaking apart) – a reaction where compounds split apart to form smaller compounds or elements • Combination reaction (joining together) – a reaction where elements or compounds come together to form new compounds • Replacement reaction (switching places) – a reaction where at least one molecule splits apart, and the parts of the molecules switch places

  6. Guess the Example • NaCl + AgF = NaF + AgCl • Replacement • AB + CD = AD + CB • Fe+ S→FeS • COMBINATION • A + B = (becomes) = AB • H2CO3 ---> H2O + CO2 • DECOMPOSITION • AB = (breaks into) = A + B

  7. Closing it up…. • Discuss the following with your SHOULDER PARTNER: - Can matter ever be created or destroyed? Why or why not?
