  3. Introduction Early years AbhinavBindra was born in an affluent Punjabi Sikh family. He did his initial formative education at St. Stephen's School Chandigarh.[5] His parents had an indoor shooting range installed at their home in Patiala, Punjab. His Mental Coach was AmitBhattacharjee, who has been closely associated with him since the beginning of his career. Bhattacharjee and Lt. Col. Dhillon (who was also his first Coach) were the first ones to spot the potential in AbhinavBindra was the youngest Indian participant at the 2000 Olympic Games. His current coach is five-time Olympic shooter Gabriele Bühlmann from Basel, Switzerland, with whom he trained in Germany before the Olympics. In the 2000 Olympics Bindra achieved a score of 590, placing him 11th in the qualification round, and did not qualify for the finals since only the top eight competed in the finals.

  4. Career Bindra won six gold medals at various international meets in the European Circuit in 2001, which proved to be a purple patch for him. He was conferred the Rajiv Gandhi KhelRatna Award for the year 2001. In the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games, competing in the Air rifle event, AbhinavBindra bagged Gold medal in the Pairs event and won the Silver medal in the individual event. Despite breaking the Olympic record, AbhinavBindra failed to secure a medal for India, in the 2004 Athens Olympics. However, on 24 July 2006, he became the first Indian shooter to win a World Championship gold in Zagreb, which was second to Dr. Karni Singh's, who won a silver medal in 1962 in a World Championship meet. At the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, he bagged the Gold in the Pairs event, while managed to acquire the third position (bronze) in the Singles event. He, however, missed the 2006 Asian Games at Doha due to an injury at the back.

  5. AWARDS Due to excellence in the shooting sport, AbhinavBindra has been bestowed with some of the most prestigious awards in India. In 2000, he received Arjuna Award, while in 2001 he was entitled to Rajiv Gandhi KhelRatna, India's highest sports award. In 2009, he bagged one of the India's most prestigious civilian award - PadmaBhushan. Apart from the awards, he has been bestowed with cash prizes for winning the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

  8. Biography AbhinavBindra, is the current World and Olympic Champion in Air Rifle shooting. He is the first ever Indian to win an individual Gold Medal since 1900 – the year our country participated in the Olympic games for the first time. His  unparalleled achievements in the shooting  arena have made the nation proud and he has been bestowed with honors  from a very young age due to his consummate performances on the international stage. He received the Arjuna Award at the young age of  17 and has been the youngest recipient of the Rajiv Gandhi KhelRatna Awards – the highest sporting honor in the country at 18 years.  Abhinav has also been decorated with the PadmaBhushan, the third highest civilian honor, in 2009 after his historic Gold Medal win at the Beijing Olympics.
