  1. A Design for Emerging Markets (DEM): Filter Press Abstract The objective of this project is to design a water filtration system that can be created by two people, for under $200 dollars in a struggling country. Our group decided to create a water filtration system for India. The first step in beginning the project was to create a customer needs survey that covered basic facts about water retrieval and care in India. We had the surveys sent to India and completed by actual individuals in the village we are designing the filtration system for. The survey results allowed us to see that we had to create a cheap, portable and effective water filtration system that could be used by families across the village in India. Table 1. Weighted Hierarchal Customer Needs List Obtained from Surveys In the final design for our filter, each layer represents a different filtration level. We will use medium jute, fine jute, and old silk fabric to filter the dirt particles from the water as well as coat the inside of the filter with a copper paint to kill bacteria. Revised Problem Statement After sifting through sources and evaluating the customer needs assessments, our new goal for the water filter is to design a compact and light portable water filtration model that is effective in cleaning water, comfort and has fast distillation process. Benchmarking of Four Products Conclusion The final product of our design utilized materials that were abundant in India to reduce cost, as well as filtration methods using materials that are inexpensive and easily replaceable. The filter can be placed inside of the backpack for mobility and has a spigot that can release the water at the user’s need. Team 5: Erinn Kenline, Taylor Lacey, Alpar Turk, Harsh Tulsiani
