  5. General framework for activities supporting health • According to Polish law city authorities are responsible for prevention programmes and health promotion in its area • In 1993 the city of Lodz joined the WHO European Healthy Cities Network

  6. Local strategy for health • In March 2001 the City Council in Lodz adopted a resolution which introduced a local strategy „Directions of action for health of Lodz citizens” which is based on a holistic approach to health as a means to attain better health and a higher quality of life. • The key players are: - different departments of the Municipal Office of Lodz - health sector - social welfare sector - kindergartens, schools, universities - NGOs

Prevention programmes for children • Early detection and prevention of cardiovascular diseases examination of 27 000 students aged 7 – 19; 10% with high blood pressure or overweight • Prevention of lung diseases – education at schools + art contest about 2000 students aged 7 – 16 every year • Prevention of faulty posture – education at schools + materials for students and parents – about 3000 students every year • Prevention of tooth decay – education at schools + materials for students • Vaccination against flu and meningitis – children from„children’s homes”, social welfare centres

Educational programmes for children Healthy diet – primary schools – about 1800 students every year Oral health – kindergartens – about 1500 children every year Stressas a risk factorof cardiovascular diseases – secondary schools – about 1500 students every year First aid – primary and secondary schools, students and teachers- about 6000 students, 400 teachers Prevention of addictions – drugs, alcohol – secondary schools – about 6000 students every year Prevention of addictions – tobacco – primary schools – about 9000 students every year

  10. The Lodz Network of Health Promoting Schools and Kindergartens Established in 1996. TheNetwork consists of 60 primary schools, 35 secondary schools, 2 educational centres and 32 kindergartens. The work of the Network includes: • regular business meetings of school and kindergarten health promotioncoordinators • providing schools and kindergartens with health education materials andteaching aids • health education in schools and kindergartens: • training courses for health promotion coordinators, nurses and peerhealthpromotionleaders: • supporting school organizations and inter school sports, art, and literary competitions on health.
