  1. Legislative Day

    January 26, 2012 Atlanta, GA Capital Dome
  2. Introduction This self study module is to help prepare those that wish to attend or those that wish to have a better understanding of Legislative Day here in the state of Georgia. This self study module should take between approximately 30-60 minutes to complete. At the end of this self study module there is a 10 question quiz. Upon completion of the quiz please send the answer sheet to gans.legislative@gmail.com in order to receive a certificate of completion for community hours or Portfolio. Each school will be awarded points per % of students that complete this to go towards next years Legislative Award at the GANS convention in 2012.
  3. What is Legislative Day? Legislative Day is a time when nurses and nursing students from across the state of Georgia come together in order to meet and discuss legislation with elected state officials at the capital. There are different Legislative Days for various groups, however Nurses/Nursing Students have one day that is for us alone. What we make of that day and the time allotted is in our hands.
  4. Why is this important to student nurses? As student nurses the immediate need to be involved may not be apparent at this point in our careers. However, the laws and regulations that are being passed now will effect graduates when they start to practice nursing. For this reason it is important for student nurses to have a voice in the laws and regulations that are being created today that will effect everyone tomorrow.
  5. Does this really help, or is it a waste of my study time? This is a good question that a lot of people ask when these type of events occur. The saying “There is strength in number” is very valid. One person might begin an idea forward, but without numbers it will not get far. Shows of numbers during political events such as this or during key votes does effect change. History has shown that such events does in fact change the minds of our political leaders.
  6. How does a Bill become Law? A bill goes through a long process to become a law at any level of government. Most bills go through various levels of committees before they reach the House or Senate side of the Legislator. After reaching the either the House or Senate debates go on about the Bill before a vote is taken. After this it must go to the other half of the Legislator where it undergoes another round of debate and voting. If a Bill can pass both Legislators then the Governor can sign the Bill into Law or Veto it. If a Veto occurs the Legislator can outvote the Governor with a 2/3 vote.   7. Successful tips for how to lobby an elected official Elected officials are very busy persons when in session. Normally an elected official will sit on multiple committees and will be in sessions while Bills are being debated as well as when voting occurs. For these reasons Elected officials do not have a lot of time to spare for other things. When talking with an Elected official remember to: Be polite while you are talking to your Elected official. Don’t waste their time, they don’t have much to spare. Don’t argue, make your case and present facts not arguments. Be honest and constructive, not demanding Don’t forget to thank them for their time. It really is valuable and they have given you some of it.   8. How do you find your elected official at the Capital? Your elected officials can be found by district on the Stateof Georgia’s General Assembly web site. Also office hours and contact information can be found for each official on this site. Remember there is a State Senator and Representative. This includes comprehensive health care, education and a safe environment, as well as the basic needs of nutrition and shelter. WORKFORCE ADVOCACY GNA believes that workplace safety of nurses warrants special attention and supports programsdesigned to prevent job-related injuries, illnesses and deaths, including identification andcorrection of workplace hazards. GNA promotes health and safety programs in the workplace.

  11. Bills that are carried over from last year There is a bill that is left over from last year that will go back into the General Assembly for revision that will affect nurses already in field. A law was created a few years ago that no longer recognized Diploma RN degrees, hence any RN that had a Diploma would not be able to renew their license. This issue affects many RNs that have been in field for many years and received their RNs when Diploma schools were popular and plentiful in the United States. This revision of the law will allow these nurses to renew their license without issue in the state of Georgia. House Bill for Diploma RN correction
