  2. Purpose of Presentation • To provide awareness level information related to determining participation in state assessment focusing on students with disabilities

  3. IDEA • Since 1998, IDEA has required ALL students with an IEP to be assessed using the state and district-wide assessments. • If a student’s IEP determines it is not appropriate for the student to participate in the [general] state and district-wide assessment, the student must be assessed using an alternate assessment.

  4. NCLB: Section 200.6 • “A state’s academic assessment system required under Section 200.2 must provide for the participation of ALL students in the grades assessed.” • “The state’s academic assessment system MUST provide for one or more alternate assessment for students with disabilities as defined under section 602(3) of IDEA.”

Assessment Accommodations • Decision MUST be made for EACH content area • Specify in the IEP • Standard or nonstandard • What are the consequences of using a nonstandard assessment accommodation • Will NOT count as being assessed for NCLB participation rate • Will NOT count for Michigan Promise Award

  25. “or those who function as if they have such impairment” • A phrase that refers to a student who may, by diagnostic category, be identified as having a certain cognitive impairment, but who adaptively function within another level of impairment.

  28. MI-Access Functional Independence For students for whom the IEP Team has determined that the MEAP, MEAP with assessment accommodations, MI-Access Participation or MI-Access Supported Independence are inappropriate.
