2. What is it? A study skills website that the school subscribes to.
For most schools the cost is around $1-2 per student, and every student, parent and teacher in the secondary school has access to the site both at school and at home for a whole year.
The site helps students learn in an interactive way about the study skills needed for success at school.
3. What topics are covered?
4. There are also some mini-units:
5. How can schools use it?
Any, or all, of the ways below:
Parents and students can browse the site at home.
Schools may integrate units in pastoral programs.
Teachers may specify units for individuals.
Teachers may direct classes to complete units.
6. How does it help students? The more different ways we can approach the topic of study skills the more students skills will evolve and develop.
The handbook site uses multimedia to engage students in what can be a dry topic. It takes advantage of students interest in technology to involve them in the content around study skills.
The interactive nature of the site ensures students interact with the information (and for each section of text students can click on a button and listen instead of reading).
The site has been designed by Australian educators specifically for Australian secondary students and brings together in an educationally sound way material that is constantly improved, updated and tailored to the needs of todays students.
38. What does it cost? Annual subscription fees are as follows and include GST:
AUD$597 for a small school (<500 students)
AUD$797 for a medium school (500-799 students)
AUD$997 for a large school (800-1099 students)
AUD$1197 for a very large school (1100+ students)
For most schools this works out at around $1 per student (or less!). For only $1-2 per student, every student, parent and teacher in your school has unlimited access to the site and all the online activities for a whole year!
39. The Handbook has been a great success. We use the handbook in a variety of ways. We have a link to it on our school website; have links to it via our school intranet; refer to it in our newsletter; refer to it in year level assemblies; use study tips in the newsletter; inform parents at information and orientation evenings; use as a class activity for learning support classes; use as tutoring tool in study skills sessions. Information is presented in a variety of formats and therefore caters for all learning styles. The topics are relevant and student friendly. The access from home and school is most important. It also gives parents ideas and strategies of how they can support their sons/daughters in a constructive way re studying.

To use the handbook we encourage students to use at home and in study periods. Sometimes used as part of lessons for particular aspects of study. Also used as a support for teacher mentors with individual Yr 11 and Yr 12 students.

I have been surfing around the handbook and it is really wonderful. I am sure that our students will get a lot out of it. I like that it is self directed. It covers a wide range of topic areas. it offers students a variety of methods of engagement. It uses age and interest appropriate language and examples.
