Embedding the use of ICT into the revised mathematics and literacy frameworks: • the revised frameworks will incorporate examples of teaching and learning in literacy and mathematics, demonstrating how the use of ICT can make an impact. This focus will draw on the range of existing materials developed including the Strategy's ITPs and the new reading materials being developed and piloted in schools as part of the Rose review. Key to this is the pedagogy needed to teach literacy and mathematics to make effective use of ICT.

  4. Children learning through ICT: • support for embedding the use of ICT in learning and teaching in literacy and mathematics through a coherent CPD programme. This builds on the 'learning and teaching using ICT: example materials from Foundation Stage to year 6' which have had one of the biggest distribution runs only exceeded by products such as the mathematics and literacy frameworks. • The materials will support seven strands of literacy and mathematics and include filming of classroom practice and teachers reflecting on the use of ICT, support for INSET sessions and materials for teachers to put into practice. The materials will be available early in the summer term 2006.

  5. ICT progression: • these materials will support the teaching and learning of ICT as a subject, and its use across the curriculum. It will help teachers assess the use of ICT throughout the primary age range, and align their planning for ICT with that for other curricular areas. These materials are being developed alongside the revisions to the mathematics and literacy frameworks.

  6. Using ICT in the Foundation Stage • The project is designed to help improve the use of ICT in Foundation Stage through a pilot in 20 Las. The pilot will fund the purchase of digital cameras, printers, training and support so that the Foundation Settings within the pilot can make use of the ICT, capture their experiences and share the good practice that they develop through web-based case studies.

  7. Learning and teaching using ICT – PNS Autumn BulletinNovember 2005 • Background • There is evidence that ICT is being used much more extensively in primary schools as a tool for teaching and learning. Teachers appear to want much more support than is currently available.

  8. Current priorities • Use of ICT in children’s independent work. • Further training for consultants on the effective use of ICT. • Support for Primary Strategy Learning Networks on how ICT can support their work. • Effective use of recent publications, including the Autumn Package (at www.nwnet.org.uk). • Effective use of resources offered through the National Whiteboard Network. • Identifying the specific areas of reading, writing and mathematics where ICT can make a particular contribution.

  9. Looking ahead • Effective use of ICT impacting on pupil attainment. • ICT embedded in work across the Primary Strategy. • ICT as a key lever to support transition between Years 6 and 7. •Exploration of the range of interactive technologies. • Whiteboards becoming commonplace.

  10. LA Advisors and consultants • are well placed to give encouragement and provide challenge to headteachers and teachers about effective and less effective uses of ICT and the factors that make use of ICT more or less effective. • While there is now widespread acceptance that ICT can make a significant contribution to improving learning and teaching, many teachers lack confidence in its effective use and have a limited repertoire of ideas for using ICT in their work.
