  6. Background Information (1) The Amazon The Amazon rainforest is one of the world’s greatest conservation challenges. This vast equatorial ecosystem is home to one fifth of the planet’s plant and animal species, more than 200 indigenous cultures, and 30 million people in search of sustenance and wealth.
