What is Rotary? • The world’s Premier Service Organization • 2nd Largest International Service Organization, with 1.2 million members • Non-voting member of the United Nations General Assembly • The impetus behind the global fight to wipe out polio • A century of service: founded by Paul Harris in Chicago on February 23, 1905

5. Who is eligible to join? • Business and Professional leaders of high ethical standards • Able to commit their time • Able to meet the financial obligations • Retired persons who would have been eligible during their working years • Honorary members

6. What are my obligations? • Financial • Attendance • Weekly meetings • Make-ups • Project Participation • Sponsorship of new members • Participate in Rotary’s Fall Carnival

7. Why does Rotary have all these rules ?? Service Clubs worldwide have lost membership over the last decade BUT NOT ROTARY ! Members enjoy each others acquaintance, status in their communities, and the satisfaction of completing worthwhile projects.

8. What is a classification and why do we have those? • Your classification describes your activity within your business or profession. • Clubs seek a broad range of classifications in the makeup of their membership • To accurately represent the community • To avoid being a trade or professional union • To remain non-political, and non-religious

9. What are my financial obligations? • One-time membership fee of $100 • Monthly payment of $20, payable on first Wednesday for -that month’s dues and $15 weekly for buffet meals • Participate in Rotary Foundation @ $100+ per year (through weekly 50/50 game) and more • Pay for any guest meals @$15—use envelopes

10. How can I meet the attendance requirement? • Attend our club meetings on Wednesdays • Attend the meetings of other Rotary clubs • Attend the district conference or international convention • Participate in projects for which the board has approved make-ups • Participate in board meetings or committee meetings

The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International • Distributed $86.7 million in 2003-2004 • 100% of contributions are used for charitable and educational purposes (3 year delay plan) • All projects are designed and managed by Rotarians • Demand for humanitarian matching funds has exceeded the amount available

Foundation activities of Rotary Club of Barrow-Nuvuk • Host Group Study Exchange team from Australia, South Africa, Italy, England, and other countries • Raised funds to be matched by the Foundation in support -Russian orphanage -Russian club’s equipment project disabled persons -Computers to Chile -Support Brazilian street kids -Water wells in India (in progress)

This is Rotary Club of Barrow-Nuvuk • Chartered 1988-Sponsored by College Rotary Club • World’s farthest north Rotary Club • Has met weekly on Wednesdays at Pepe’s for over 18 years • As of 05/31/05 we have 21 members. • “Nuvuk” is the Inupiaq Eskimo word for “point”, as in Point Barrow • One charter member: Mike Jeffery

This is Rotary Club of Barrow-Nuvuk Ongoing Projects • Personal Achievement Scholarship for improved student at BHS • Concordia Language Villages scholarship • Send Barrow youth abroad for 11 months Rotary Youth Exchange • Host youth exchange students for week-long stays • Sponsor students to attend Rotary Youth Leadership Award camp • “Centennial project” of Circumpolar Arctic youth mural at Tuzzy Library • Support Girl Scouts camps on North Slope

What Happens at Club Board Meetings?Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Sam & Lee’s, when called by the President • Decisions on financial commitments • Decisions to undertake projects • Recommendations to invite prospective members • Planning for the year • All members are invited to attend board meetings at any time. These count as make-ups!

24. Where do we fit in? • All Rotary Clubs are members of Rotary International • Rotary International is divided into 530 Districts • Districts are grouped into Zones for the purpose of electing the board of directors for Rotary International

25. We are part of District 5010 70 Clubs • Alaska – 34 Clubs • Yukon Territory – 2 Clubs • Russia, east of the Urals – 34 clubs

26. That’s 2,800 members Three countries Eleven time zones and 6.5 million square miles! [almost as big as South America’s 6.9 million miles!]

27. What does a district do? Lead by the District Governor, the district exists to assist clubs and Rotarians by facilitating: • Communication • Organizing activities such as youth exchange • Organizing meetings of Rotarians such as the District Conference • Providing training for Rotary club leaders

28. How can we get to know the other Rotarians in our district? • Get on a district committee • Youth Exchange, Membership Development, Rotaract, World Community Service • Attend the district conference (in May every year) • Visit the internet • www.rotary.org • www.rotary5010.org • www.barrowrotary.org
