  3. Tooth care preparations • Tooth care preparations are the preparations meant to be applied to the teeth with a tooth brush for the purpose of cleaning the accessible surface of the teeth. • Tooth care are used in the following cases:- • Cleansing of tooth • Polishing of tooth • Removal of strains from the teeth • Reduce incidence of tooth decay • Reduction of mouth odours • Reduction of periodontal disease (disease of the gum) • Prevention of formation or removal of dental plaque • Prevention of formation of calculus. Tooth care preparations • Tooth paste or tooth powder should have the following qualities:- • It should be economical • It should be non-toxic • It should be properly sweetened and flavored • It should give fresh and clean sensation • It should be efficient in removing food substances, plaque and other foreign particles • It should clean the teeth.   5. Shampoo • Shampoos may be defined as a preparation containing surface active agents which are used to remove dirt, grease and debris from the hair, scalp and other parts of the body without affecting the natural gloss of hair. • Shampoo also help to keep the hair fragrant, lustrous, soft and manageable. • In majority of the cases, shampoos are water soluble solutions or suspensions prepared by dissolving cleansing agents in suitable liquid to which other agents are added to improve the functions of the shampoo. Shampoo • Qualities of an ideal shampoo • It should be capable of removing grease, dirt, and skin debris from the hair and scalp. • It should be non-toxic. • It should be non-irritant • It should provide sufficient fragrance to the hair after its use • It should be effective in small amounts • It should get easily removed by washing with water • It should produce sufficient foam, both in hard and soft water • It reduces the fluffiness and smoothness the hair shafts. Lipsticks • Lipsticks is the most widely used cosmetic item by the women to give an attractive colour and appearance to the lips. • Lipsticks can change the apparent facial characteristics of the woman. • These are usually manufactures as moulded sticks and consist of colouring pigments dissolved or dispersed in a fatty base consisting of a suitable blend of oils, fats and waxes suitably perfumed Faculty of Pharmacy, Omer Al-Mukhtar University, Tobruk, Libya.

Lipsticks • Qualities of an ideal lipstick • It should be non-irritant • It should be non-toxic • It should be stable both physically and chemically • It should not dry on storage • It should be free from gritty particles • It should maintain the lip colour for longer period after its application • It should be easily applicable and removable after its application • It should not break during use • It should give shiny and smooth appearance • It should be free from sweating Faculty of Pharmacy, Omer Al-Mukhtar University, Tobruk, Libya.

  9. Cold creams • Cold cream is an emulsion, which when applied on the skin, a cooling effect is produced due to slow evaporation of water present in the emulsion. • They are generally prepared by emulsification of oil and water. • In olden days cold cream was prepared from animal fat and vegetable oil. • Vegetable oils have the tendency to become rancid, they are replaced by mineral oil which gives a more stable product. • Cold creams are o/w type emulsion but after application on the skin, sufficient water evaporates to permit phase inversion to w/o type.   10. Vanishing creams • These are oil-in water type emulsion which when applied to the skin leave an almost invisible layer on it. Hence, they are called vanishing creams. • These creams can be quickly washed off with water due to the presence of o/w emulsifiers. • Vanishing creams are prepared by emulsification of stearic acid and water by means of alkalies such as sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, borax, triethanolamine. • The main ingredient in vanishing cream is steric acid which give a pearly white shinning appearance to the cream, which on application gives a thin white film of free stearic acid.   11. Shaving creams • Shaving creams are generally formulated as heavy concentrated soap solution in glycerin and water. • The soap is formed by the saponification of fatty acids and fixed oils with alkalies. • Glycerin is included in the formula as humectants. • A suitable preservative and perfume may be added according to the need. Shaving creams • Qualities of a good shaving cream • It should be non-toxic • It should be non-irritating • It should be smooth, soft and entirely free from lumps • It should have good wetting properties • It should be economical • It should retain a satisfactory consistency according to temperature Faculty of Pharmacy, Omer Al-Mukhtar University, Tobruk, Libya.

  13. Face care • These are used for cleansing, refreshing and nourishing effects. They are available in the form of solid, liquid and semi-solid. The various types of facial cosmetics are available in the market to preserve the health and suppleness of facial skin. • They prevent premature ageing of skin and improve the overall looks and personality. • The following are some face cares • Face powder • Creams etc. Faculty of Pharmacy, Omer Al-Mukhtar University, Tobruk, Libya.

  14. Other new products be included • Hair dressings: Hair dressings are applied to dry hair in order to provide extra gloss. The main purpose of hair dressing is to apply a thin film of oil to keep the hair in order to give a natural looking gloss without any appearance of oiliness. • Hair dyes: Hair dyes are used to change the natural colour of the hair. The grey or white hair which has changed with age are converted into black colour with the help of hair dyes in order to restore a youthful appearance.
