  3. La formation française Grade levels start at 12 (kindergarten)and end at terminale (senior). L’écoleprimaire = 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7 Students typically enter school (grade 12) at age 5. Le collège = 6 (sixième), 5 (cinquième), 4 (quatrième), 3 (troisième) Sixième usually starts around age 10 or 11. Le lycée = seconde, première, terminale

  6. Agreeing and disagreeing To agree: Oui, beaucoup. Moiaussi. Moi non plus. To disagree: Moi, non. Non, pas trop. Moi, si. Pas moi. Using si instead of oui: Use si to contradict a negative question or statement. Tun’aimes pas le chocolat? Si, j’adore le chocolat. Tun’aimes pas les arts plastiques? Maissi, j’aime les arts plastiques.

To give the time: Il est ___________ heures ___________. There are two ways to give time in French, l’heureconversationnelle(12-hour clock) and l’heureofficielle(24-hour clock). L’heureofficielleis used for school schedules, transportation, hours of operation, t.v. programs, and movie times.

Favorable opinions: C’est… facile. génial. super. cool. passionnant. intéressant. Indifference: C’est pas mal Çava. C’estcommecicommeça. Unfavorable opinion: C’est… difficile. pas terrible. pas super. zéro. nul. barbant.

  12. Note culturelle • The French system of grading is based on a scale of 0-20. • 10 is a passing grade. Students are usually happy with a 10. • Grades of 17 and 18 are given to top-notch work. • Grades of 19 & 20 are rare.

  13. Informal negation Informally (in spoken French only) it is normal to drop the “ne” when making a statement or question negative. Examples: Je n’aime pas les maths. (formal/written French) J’aime pas les maths. (informal/spoken French) Cen’est pas super. (formal/written French) C’est pas super. (informal/spoken French)
