  2. OUTLINE Background of compulsory vs voluntary student unionism Overview of the new legislation What it would mean for the student experience? What decision will BUSA and the University make for 2012?

  3. Background Compulsory Student Unionism Traditionally a compulsory fee was the norm Voluntary Student Unionism Came into effect in 2007 Student Services and Amenities Bill Bill was put to Parliament in 2010 This passed on 11 October 2011 Key amendments by the Greens

  4. Higher Education Legislation Amendment (Student Services and Amenities) Bill 2010 The legislation caps the fee at $263 Therefore, SAM would be reduced to a maximum of $87.70 per semester for full-time students The fee allows the use of the fee for everything which SAM is currently allocated to: sporting, social, cultural and educational activities, as well as advocacy support, child care and orientation programs for all students

  5. Higher Education Legislation Amendment (Student Services and Amenities) Bill 2010 Payment of the fee can be deferred to SA-HELP This a government loan like FEE-HELP Part-time students are only required to pay a maximum of $197.25, which amounts to 75% of the $263 fee charged to full-time students Maximum full-time fee: $263 ($87.70 per sem) Maximum part-time fee: $195.25 ($65.75 per sem)

  6. Reception of the Bill The passage of the bill has been supported by Universities Australia, the peak representative body of Australia’s 39 universities. “The passage of this legislation is just so important to our members and the students attending university. It will reinvigorate student life and enable universities to once again provide the fundamental services that help students to navigate university, achieve success in their studies, and participate in sport and the university community.” Universities Australia CEO Dr Glenn Withers

  7. What it would mean for the Bond student experience? SAM update: between 40-50% per semester Compulsory for all club executives Allocation: (1) BUSA; (2) SAM Committee The Student Services and Amenities Fee is an opportunity to enhance the Bond student experience The fee would, as SAM is, be distributed to BUSA and the Gym every semester for the direct benefit of students More money to allocate to Bond’s growing number of sporting and cultural clubs

  8. What it would mean for the Bond student experience? What does the Bond student experience mean? What makes it different? The fee will allow Clubs and Societies to not only enhance their current services, but introduce new services and run new events Cultural clubs Social events Academic services Sporting events and competitions Australian Uni Games / Northern Uni Games Bondstock Campus Amenities

  9. What decision will BUSA and the University make? Special General Meeting called for Friday 4 November at 3pm BUSA will put the issue to a vote by putting forward a motion that the fee be adopted for 2012 Whether the fee would be rolled out in January, May or September ultimately lies with the University
