Our 4th and last day in Negros Oriental was spent at a paradise called Apo Island. It is a volcanic island known for its marine sanctuary. It is home to over 650 documented species of fish including the clown fish (popularly known as Nemo in Finding Nemo) and estimated to have over 400 species of corals. Thus rated as 1 of the top 10 diving spots in the world. • From Dumaguete City, we rode a bus to the town of Malatapay some 30 kms away. The port to Apo Island is located at the back of the town’s market. The boat ride between Malatapay and Apo island is about 45 minutes and it’s a bit wet so be sure to wrap your things to protect it from sea water. We rented a boat for P2,500.00 and paid P100 for general admission (used to keep the sanctuary clean and in good condition) to the island. Snorkeling gear are for rent for P100.00 and a guide can be hired for P150.00. But you can still explore the sanctuary by yourself as what we did. • Apo Island Marine Santuary • We walked the path leading to the Apo Island Marine Sanctuary and Protected Seascape for 10-15 minutes. And it was worth it. It’s so beautiful and comparable to the fish sanctuary in Balicasag Island in Bohol. • A thumb’s up from Arbie describes it all. • If you don’t want to take a walk though, there is another good location for snorkeling near the rock formation. • The land area of Apo Island is just 12 hectares. It has no electricity and the only source of power is from the village generator set. It is turned on only from 6pm to 8pm. But surprisingly, you will find an Apo Island Beach Resort behind the rock formation whose power is on until 11pm. • The resort has a beach-side restaurant and bar where we had our snacks before leaving the island.
