Demonstration What is meant by demonstration • A demonstration is an explanation, display or illustration showing how to complete a skill/task correctly.
Demonstration Purpose of a demonstration • A demonstration gives you a clear picture of how a skill is performed and lets you know what it is you need to do to perform a skill correctly. You can then attempt to copy the performance of the skill/task that you have seen or heard.
Feedback Q. What is Feedback? A. Feedback is information that a performer receives about their performance.
FEEDBACK Feedback should be given immediately if possible. Feedback should start with a positive comment followed by areas to improve on. Why do you think feedback should be immediate and start positively?
There are two main types of feedback. EXTERNAL and INTERNAL. External feedback can be information received from a coach, teacher or classmate/partner etc. A ‘checklist’ (written) or video (visual) can be used to help record performance. External feedback can also come in the form of ‘knowledge of results’. E.g. How many goals/baskets you score from a set number of attempts.
Internal feedback (or ‘kinaesthetic’ or ‘intrinsic’ feedback), is information concerning the ‘feel’ of the movement. E.g. Whether or not you are balanced in a headstand. Task: Describe a situation when you have received written and visual feedback.
Examples • Basketball (team)- Free throw- • Type of feedback = Knowledge of results. • How feedback was received= I watched my free throw fall short of the basket • Weakness identified= I did not put enough power into the shot In my 2nd free throw • Change made or practice used to improve performance- I put more power into the shot • Effect of change or practice- The ball went further and higher and dropped into the basket to score
Another example • Badminton- (team or individual) • Short serve • Type of feedback = Knowledge of results • How feedback was received = I saw that my serve went too high over the net for my opponent to attack it • Weakness identified = My serve went too high over the net • Change made or practice used to improve performance - I hit my next serve lower • Effect of change or practice - My opponent had to hit the shuttle upwards and I could smash it.
Feedback should be ……. • Positive • Precise and Accurate • And given • As Soon As Possible
Benefits of receiving positive feedback • Allows the performer to stay motivated whilst learning to improve weaknesses. • It made me feel that my practices were working so I kept practicing. • It builds up my confidence/motivated me and I kept trying hard. • It lets me know what I did well so I can practice on my weaker areas.
Benefits of receiving immediate feedback. • It allows you to address a problem whilst its fresh in your mind. • It allows you to address a problem straight away/during performance. • It will be accurate because its fresh in the observers mind.
Precise and Accurate (1 or 2 points) • It is less confusing/easier to remember so that I can focus on one part at a time, • Too much information can confuse a learner. • Being told too many faults can make you demotivated/ lose confidence/stop trying.
