  2. When as it found? • In 1610 Galileo was the first to observe Venus’s visible disk. • After Copernicus discovery that the sun was the center of the inverse. • Galileo confirmed his theory and discovered Venus.

  3. General Information • The axis tilt is 177.3 degrees. • Rotates clockwise. • One day on Venus is 116 days and 18 hours on Earth. • 224 Earth days is one year on Venus. • Venus is about 108 million km from the sun. • The temperature on Venus does not vary like it does on Earth the average temperature day and night all year long is about 460 degrees Celsius.

  4. Venus Structure • Venus is a terrestrial planet. • The interior is composed of rock and metal, the core is molten metallic and has a rocky mantle and crust (much like Earth’s).

  5. Venus vs. Earth • Venus mass is about 4.868x10^24 kg which is about 1.23 times smaller than Earth’s mass. • Venus density is 5520 kg/m^3 which is about .95 times bigger that Earth’s density.

  6. Atmosphere • The atmosphere of Venus is very thick and hot. • The weight of the atmosphere is so massive that it would crush any human. • The atmosphere is made up of mostly carbon dioxide. Thick clouds of sulfuric acid cover the planet. • The atmosphere of Venus is one of the hottest places in the solar system.

  7. Surface • Has more volcanoes than Earth but they are less active than Earth’s. • Venus has no rings or moons. • Venus surface is pretty horrible because the thick atmosphere and high temperatures.

  8. Exploring Venus • The first spacecraft to visit this planet was the Mariner 2. • A more recent NASA spacecreaft named the Magellan used radar instruments that could reach through the thick atmosphere and reveal its hellish surface. • A Russian Venera program actually landed on the surface of Venus. They were able to send home images of the surface before it malfunctioned by the incredible heart and pressure on the surface.
