  4. High School Counselor Roles • Support academic achievement • Course selection planning • Career exploration and advisement • Middle school & post-secondary transitions • Confidential problem-solving and coping skills

  5. Additionally… • School Counselors specialize in short term and education-related issues and are not intended to provide extensive therapy. • Counselors are happy to connect parents and students with community resources/therapists and provide support during the school day.

  6. Freshman Orientation First day of school is for freshmen only • Welcomed by Link Crew • Learn about PHS expectations • Tour the school • Introduction to PHS technology • Information about sports, clubs and activities

Encourage Involvement Consider joining sports, clubs and activities. • Meet people with similar interests • Gain teamwork, volunteerism, organization and work ethic skills • A plus for college admissions and scholarships • Listing in course book, flyers by counseling office • Studies have shown that students who participate in school activities get better grades!

  8. HS Course Registration Process 8th grade teachers will recommend English, Math and Science Counselors meet with students to verify course selections: St. John’s & St. Mary’s – March 10th Bartels Middle School – March 11th Schedules will be available in late May.

  9. PHS Graduation Requirements • 4 English credits • 3 Social Studies credits • 3 Math credits • 3 Science credits • 1.5 Physical Education credits • .5 Health credit • .5 Personal Finance credit • 8.5 electives to total 24 credits

  10. Risk Indicators for Not Graduating • Attendance – missing 10% of instruction (18 days) •Behavior – 1 or more suspensions •Mobility – 1 or more moves •Performance – D or F in one or more courses •GPA – lower than 2.0 (C average) •Academic Progress – accumulate fewer credits than number required to graduate

Career Paths and PHS Courses • PHS courses are linked to 16 Career Clusters • Identified to help students: • Explore potential interest in clusters • Gain experience in clusters they hope to pursue • Academics are important for ALL clusters! • GOAL: To expose students to future career possibilities as frequently and directly as possible. • Through classroom guidance, collaboration with teachers, grade-level conferences, etc.
