  6. What’s different about learning and teaching online? • Online curriculum • Increased use of technology tools • Social dynamic • Online discussion and pace of interaction • Communication methods • Assessment • Technical challenges may occur • Increased access/access issues must be addressed

What’s the same as in the face to face environment? • Need to be aligned to core principles of good teaching • Need to establish clear expectations • Need to understand the content and have good curriculum • Need to provide regular feedback • Important to listen to and learn from students • Need to meet individual student learning needs

What professional development do online instructors need? • Ongoing preparation in core content and pedagogy • Facilitation skills that foster reflective discussions leading to deeper learning • Building an online learning community • Experience in online environment with good models • Attention to online voice • Assessment of learning in the online environment • Technical tools to support communication and collaboration • Classroom management in the online environment • Structure of the online curriculum • Differentiating learning to meet individual learning goals

Effective Facilitation Techniques • Model good online behavior • Encourage participant reflection • Listen to and learn from participants • Be positive! • Use whole group and individual strategies and tools • Use asynchronous and synchronous approaches appropriately • Be sensitive to netiquette, dominating voices, writing style • Establish clear expectations; be flexible to meet learner’s goals • Use effective questioning techniques • Utilize casual chat and share personal side • Provide ongoing feedback

Where do teachers get training to teach online? • Pre-service teacher certification options • Not many right now! • Should it be required for teacher certification? • Should there be a special certification? • Pre-service online teacher training • Ideal to be trained prior to teaching • Ongoing professional development needed • Importance of ongoing online teacher community

Elements Necessary for Teaching and Learning Online • Content developers • Development of content • Facilitation of the group to meet goals • Participation in the learning environment • Expectations for participants, facilitators, and developers • Assessment strategies that are formative and summative • Online model for delivery of content • Course management system for organization and consistency

Course site: www.opennh.net • Being Successful with Online Learning is a tutorial, freely accessible to all. • Provides a basic experience for learning about OPEN NH using our course model. • Your experience is not facilitated. Sample Participant Feedback “The most valuable information I gained from this course was seeing the differentiated learning and various resources, such as videos and tutorials, which would help students who not necessarily text based learners.
