  1. 2nd Grade Curriculum night Mrs. Johannes 2013-2014

  2. New information • Due to safety issues, parents won’t be allowed in the side or back gates in the morning. You’ll now need to sign in at the front office. This is for the safety of the students. • The morning bell will now ring at 8:10 and the gates in the back will be shut. If your child arrives after 8:10, they will need to come through the office.

  3. Daily Schedule • 8:10- 8:20Morning Work • 8:20-10:00Reading Block • 10:00-10:15 Snack Recess • 10:15-11:15 Writing • 11:15-11:50 Social Studies/ Science • 11:50- 12:20 Lunch -Kids will go to recess first • 12:20-12:50 AR/Independent Reading • 12:50 – 2:15Math Block & Calendar • 2:15 – 3:00 Specials (not on Mondays) • 3:05 Dismissal

B.E.E Folder& Behavior Management • Please check your child’s folder daily for any important letters or papers. • Your child’s behavior calendar is in his/her B.E.E folder and they will color their day. • We do check folders each day, but sometimes things are over looked. Email is always the BEST way to reach us.

Behavior Expectations • All of the second grade team has classroom management strategies. • We all have the same expectations and consequences. • We feel strongly among our team that when we work together to differentiate our curriculum to make sure that each student is learning at their pace then the students are actively engaged in their learning. • Our second grade team goal is to encourage independence and student self monitoring. • If ever there is a problem or a concern, we will notify you.

  6. Homework • Your child’s homework will be sent home weekly in their B.E.E Folder. Some of the homework will be completed in their homework journal (due on Fridays) • Math will be due every Thursday(usually on the back of the sheet). We’ll be checking math on Thursday as well as the daily reading log. • Spelling and vocabulary will be completed in their homework journal and turned in on Fridays. • Reading is the MOST important! Please fill in the reading log daily.

  7. Homework Menu • Your child will have a menu of activities to choose from. Please encourage them to do different activities each week. Please keep the menu in their B.E.E. Folder. • Vocabulary is extremely important for 2nd graders to help them understand what they are reading. There will be vocabulary words every week. • The words for next week will be review. If your child needs challenge words, they will be sent home the following week.

  8. What do we learn in ? • Number Sense • Patterns • Addition and Subtraction (regular timed fact tests) • Graphing • Time and Money • Geometry • Measurement • Problem Solving

  9. Reading • Reading Process using a variety of texts and strategies • Reading comprehension in different genres- Persuasive, Expository, Descriptive, Functional • Use inferences and context clues to comprehend text • Identifying literary elements • Make connections to self, other text, and the world • Decoding and syllabication using spelling patterns

WRITING • Six Traits- Ideas, Organization, Conventions, Sentence Fluency Word Choice, and Voice • Writing Process ~ ideas, rough draft, editing, final copy • Genres of Writing ~ Functional Text: Friendly letter and Thank you notes, Narrative, Poetry and Rhymes, Expository, Literature response, and Research • Purposes of writing ~ to entertain, inform, and communicate • Spelling and Grammar ~ Houghton Mifflin/Vocabulary • Weekly spelling tests on high frequency words and common spelling patterns. (Spelling tests will be differentiated based on ability) • *transition from 1st grade sentences to paragraphs

Science/Social Studies • Physical Science ~Properties of Matter • Life Science ~ The human body (systems and parts) • Earth Science ~ Weather (clouds and temperature) • Life Science ~ The life cycle of Insects • Communities -people are different but share principles, goals, customs and traditions • Geography -Maps and symbols • Civics and Government - symbols, documents, songs, and monuments that represent America • Native Americans, Colonies and New Nation • India, China, and Japan - different cultures around the world/trade • Westward Expansion -people move to new places for different reasons

  15. Volunteers • Possible volunteer jobs include: preparing centers, working with small groups in the classroom, Art Masterpiece, and running copies. • Please contact your child’s teacher and make sure you have the correct paperwork filled out in the office.
