  1. Lesson 1-5 Tools of the Trade

  2. Ohio Content Standards: • Apply indirect measurement techniques, tools and formulas, as appropriate, to find perimeter, circumference and area of circles, triangles, quadrilaterals and composite shapes, and to find volume of prisms, cylinders, and pyramids. • Draw and construct representations of two- and three-dimensional geometric objects using a variety of tools, such as straightedge, compass and technology. • Construct congruent or similar figures using tools, such as compass, straightedge, and protractor or dynamic geometry software.

  3. Vocabulary:

  4. Vocabulary: • Straightedge:

  5. Vocabulary: • Straightedge: an object used to draw a straight line

  6. Vocabulary: • Compass:

  7. Vocabulary: • Compass: a tool used to draw arcs and circles

  8. Vocabulary: • Constructions:

  9. Vocabulary: • Constructions: when figures are drawn using only a compass and a straightedge

  10. Vocabulary: • Midpoint:

  11. Vocabulary: • Midpoint: a point in the middle of a segment

  12. Use a straightedge to determine which of the three segments at the upper left forms a straight line with the segment at the lower right.

  13. Use a straightedge to determine which of the three segments at the upper left forms a straight line with the segment at the lower right.

  14. A B l Draw a figure similar to the one shown below. Mark a point C on line l that you judge will create BC that is the same length as AB. Then measure to determine how accurate your guess was.

  15. Use a compass and straightedge to construct a six-sided figure.
