The Neolithic Revolution The Nature of the Revolution The Effects of Revolution CIVILIZATION
The Nature of the Revolution • During the Neolithic Age, people changed from being hunters and gatherers to being food producers. • We call this the NEOLITHIC REVOLUTION
During the same period, the Stone Age people began to domesticate animals such as dogs, cattle, pigs, sheep, and goats as another ready source of food.
The effects of the Revolution • The advent of agriculture increased the food supply dramatically, making it possible for larger groups of people to live together in one area. • Therefore, permanent communities or villages began to develop.
The steady food supply allowed Neolithic villagers to spend more time on other activities. One of these new skills was the ability to make pottery and weave baskets. • Settled communities also brought about the beginnings of government, where a single chief or leader was responsible for maintaining order.
CIVILIZATION • The word civilization comes from the Latin word for “civis”, which means “citizen” or someone who lives in a city. • The Neolithic revolution led to the earliest civilizations. • People lived in permanent towns or cities. • In the highly organized “civilizations”, people began to develop knowledge of farming, trade, government, law, art and science.
