  1. MICE Muon Beam • Optics Design Work • Pion-Muon-Matching • Engineering • Target • Conventional Magnets • Muon Solenoid • MoU Signed • Delivery mid summer • Diffuser • Hall (shielding)

  2. Optics Design Work (KT) • Since RAL collaboration meeting • Aimed to include material effects • Scattering s(q) • Energy loss s(dE) • Calculations with G4Beamline (KW) • Fudge in Transport/Turtle Match to dE dq ~30%

  3. ε_source TOF0 CHKV TOF1 Dipole Muons from decay solenoid V H Air filled

  4. ε_source / 10,000 TOF0 CHKV TOF1 Dipole Muons from decay solenoid V H Air filled

  5. Ways forward • These effects have been included in the rate calculations • Materials, apertures • The issue is to improve the design of the beam line to give a better through-put… • Positions of TOF… • Positions of Qts and drift spaces • Blind optimisation of parameters (TR)

  6. Beam Line Engineering 1 • Synchrotron • Redesign of S7 (parts already manufactured) • Install in August • Trial build, clean and vac test • Target & Benchmark • Opportunity to test a target in December shutdown  benchmark • Few pulse at start up – dispose of target!

  7. Beam Line Engineering 2 • Beam pipes • Stands • Vacuum • Power supplies • Controls • Water • Test beam elements (HV, Water)

  8. Diffuser • Issues: • Engineering solution • Integration around front of tracker • Tracker access for installation • Diffuser installation • Access to ToF, Cherenkov • Large shield plate

  9. 980 mm 250mm “wrong end” for diffuser - space is the same

  10. diffuser http://www.isis.rl.ac.uk/accelerator/mice/beamline/diffuserassmby2.avi Rings pushed together To open levers… and install diffuser at correct place Ring fixed to tracker Stephanie Yang/Wing Lau

  11. Progress & Risks • Progress against plan: • About 6 months slack in programme • S7 – completed procurement • Vacuum & Beam pipes • design in progress • Need to move on • Controls • Cooling/Infrastructure (hope to reuse) • Power supplies • Risks: • Shielding (cost) • Issue with quadrupoles (Q35s) (cost)
