Issues and Importance • Japanese attack the Hawaiian naval base, Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 • Over 300 Japanese planes attacked the base damaging or destroying over 20 US ships • This attack was a complete surprise as the Japanese hope to gain a quick advantage • This even was the direct cause of the US joining WWII • The attack also harmed many US civilians
Key People Commander MitsuoFuchida (left) was the leader of the Japanese air attack. He has been quoted saying “TORA TORATORA” which was Japanese code that the Americans were completely unexpected. Fuchida flew a Nakajimi B5N2 fighter jet, in which he himself participated in the bombing with. ChuichiNagumo (right) was the vice admiral at the time of attack, and he was in command of 6 Japanese air craft carriers carrying all of the attacking planes. At 6 am Hawaiian time he ordered the first wave of planes to attack, and shortly after ordered the remaining planes to also attack
Key People (Cont’d) • Husband E. Kimmel was the US naval admiral at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack. After the attack he was relieved of his duties. Simply because there was such a big shake up something needed to be changed.
Course of Action • On December 8th 1941 President Roosevelt gave a famous speech declaring that “December 7th shall forever live in infamy” • The attack caused immediate reaction and the US declared war on Japan • The Japanese government referred to this attack as “waking a sleeping giant” • This ultimately led to the dropping of the atomic bombs
Outcome • The day after the attack president Roosevelt gave a speech in which he asked the congress to declare war, all but one said yes. Thus war had begun for North America • Soon after this caused Nazi Germany and Italy to declare war on the US as well, thus the true beginning of WWII • Many Japanese people were segregated in the US and Canada because of this attack and the government thought they might be spies.
